The drawing shows a dishevelled looking cat-like figure stood up on its hind legs playing the fiddle a black and white illustration of a young girl and a cat in a field. The young girl is stood on the right, she has messy dark curly hair and is wearing a white nightie and holding a doll behind her back with one hand. With her other hand she is wagging her finger like she is telling the cat off. The cat is to the left of the image and looking up attentively at the young girl. 🧵Today is Windrush Day. Alford Gardner’s journey crossed oceans to reshape the social history of Yorkshire. Born in Jamaica, he first arrived in England in 1944, volunteering for the RAF during World War II and training as a mechanic at RAF Hunmanby Moor, Filey. Returning to Jamaica after the war, a
This image shows the before-and-after portrait of Alford Gardner, a prominent member of the Windrush generation who served in the RAF and later helped rebuild post-war Britain. During WWII, he joined the RAF as ground crew and was part of the first batch of recruits from the West Indies to arrive in England on June 3, 1944 After the war, he returned to Jamaica but came back to the UK as a passenger on the HMT Empire Windrush, docking at Tilbury Docks on June 22, 1948.Settling in Leeds: Gardner settled in Leeds, where he lived for decades, married, and raised eight children. He co-wrote a memoir titled Finding Home: A Windrush Story with his son Howard and is a key figure in documenting the experiences of Caribbean migrants in BritainDuring World War II, a bustling Butlin’s holiday camp in Filey was transformed into RAF Hunmanby Moor, a vital training ground for 4,000 West Indian and Caribbean volunteers serving in the British Commonwealth forces. Following a long-running campaign to secure a permanent home for their memory, a blue plaque was finally unveiled on April 1, 2023. Located on a private building on Filey's Queen Street, this poignant memorial ensures that the immense contribution of these wartime servicemen is never forgotten by the Yorkshire coast.

Conference CFP. Early/Modern Connections: Academic and Applied Humanities. Deadline, June 1. #earlymodern
On April 8–9, 2027, The Huntington will host a conference to explore the essential—yet often misunderstood—relationship between specialized academic scholarship and public-serving applied humanities work. Centered on the early modern period (ca. 1400 to 1800), the two-day event will highlight original research that has enabled, supported, or shaped specific public humanities or public interest projects. Like many cultural institutions, The Huntington is actively reflecting on its founding mission “to promote the public welfare,” including how to balance supporting deep, collections-based research with expanding access, engagement, and education for a broader public. This conference offers space to explore how such priorities work in concert.

Beyond asserting that past events apply to our present moment, speakers will demonstrate how they have translated their own scholarship into active public engagement in the form of art, activism, media, site-specific encounters, digital projects, or other collaborative efforts. We anticipate submissions highlighting smaller-scale individual work as well as collaborations between scholars and performers, educators, activists, writers, artists, and public-serving institutions. Collaborative applications should be limited to two participants, due to funding restrictions.

Proposals will be considered for inclusion in the conference, as well as for possible publication in the Huntington Library Quarterly’s new Early/Modern Connections section. For a successful recent example (but only one of many possible approaches), see Amanda Herbert and Kevin Dawson, “Black Aquatics: Early Modern Past, Present, and Future.”
