Kinda feel like americans should use fucked up units for time as well as everything else, like statute seconds being 1.002 SI seconds long and being divided into 77¾ freedom ticks.

noticed a lot of deliveries don't even knock anymore, or the barest of brush on the door, i wonder if there's been some kind of tightening of timings or something that knocking is one second too much

I keep reading stuff in the DF wiki and going like "oh I've been doing this for RP reasons but mechanically it's actually really dumb and I would have a less risky game if I did it a different way"
The description of altars in the game Dwarf Fortress, with "currently serve no purpose" highlighted:

Altars, also known as Offering Places, are a furniture item optionally used in temples. They can be placed with [series of keys], though they currently serve no purpose other than increasing a room's value and decoration, as temples don't require them to function.

In fortress mode, altars can be made from most materials like wood, stone, glass, and metal at their respective workshops. Altars can be stored in furniture stockpiles, and fall in the "other large tools" item type category.

Altars are extremely lightweight compared to other "furniture" (1/20 to 1/60 the weight) with the same base value, and so make excellent trade items to produce. Dwarves have been known to place skulls on altars.

In adventure mode, you can often find dice that can be rolled on altars.

A dwarf that knocks over an altar within a dedicated temple, during a tantrum or otherwise, will be cursed by that temple's deity with a random were-curse (as long as they are a believer of that deity). There is no cure. The player will receive a pop-up notification stating that the god has cursed their dwarf, and that dwarf will transform into a hostile beast during the next full moon.

i basically grew up being told there was no career in programming since all of it would soon be wysiwyg gui stuff and nobody would look at code and this year feels very strange, like a prophecy i didn't believe in but was the only one to know about is actually happening

Yeah it's just I saw a lot of reactions over-indexing on "OpenAI spent money." If you build your entire argument on "22M is a huge waste" and someone figures out it was actually 20K or something? You've missed the whole story and been made a fool. (Generic "you" here obviously.)
110
Félix @passcod.nz · 09/09/2026
Yes, though just that small part of the coverage.
111
Félix @passcod.nz · 09/09/2026
Also OpenAI didn't use a public model for this, they used an unreleased preview, so this is complete nonsense times complete nonsense, off a number they might have made up.
121
Félix @passcod.nz · 09/09/2026
OpenAI didn't spent 22 million dollars, they spent some unknown amount of compute, said it was 300B tokens, which a journo calculated would be 22 million at current public prices. These are largely hype-driven, not at-cost, so the number is complete nonsense.

I mean, they do that, the main way to reset your NZTA password is to get them to send you a new one by email. That's how I know they store the passwords in plain text. Because they sent me the *existing one*. Twice.

every day I find new things to hate with github stacks. today, it's finding out that merge queue + stacks has one killer feature (enqueue the entire stack at once) and a litany of disasters (can't dequeue the entire stack, no auto-merge, position in the stack is load-bearing on actions...)
