The Meredith effect- turning hot radiator exhaust into useful thrust and cancelling out the radiator's drag- was one reason the P-51 was about 30 mph faster than the Spitfire with the same Merlin engine. The twist? Irishman F.W. Meredith was a Soviet spy. (photo: Bob Burch/CC)

#OTD 1962: A US U-2 spy plane takes 928 photographs during 6 mins over Cuba. The images reveal Soviet nuclear missile sites under construction. Within days, Kennedy & Khrushchev are locked in the most dangerous confrontation of the Cold War. The Cuban Missile Crisis has begun.

Today in 1975, the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex at Nekoma, North Dakota, became fully operational, defending 150 Minuteman III ICBMs at Grand Forks AFB with 30 Spartan and 70 Sprint antiballistic missiles—armed with 5-Mt W71 warheads and 1-kt W66 enhanced-radiation warheads, respectively.
An aerial color photograph of the Stanley R. Mickelesen Safeguard Complex at Nekoma, North Dakota, the only operational Safeguard site ever built (10 were originally envisioned when the program was announced in 1969). The Missile Site Radar is the pyramid-shaped building in the background at center (a cooling pond is behind and to the right). The small square launch area in the foreground contains launchers for 16 Sprint antiballistic missiles. The larger rectangular area immediately behind it contains launchers for 30 Spartan antiballistic missiles.A black and white graphic and map showing the location of the various facilities comprising the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex in relation to each other and to Grand Forks Air Force Base, as well as how the system was designed to conduct long- and short-range intercepts of incoming ICBM reentry vehicles using Spartan and Sprint antiballistic missiles, respectively.

These are what the clouds on Jupiter look up close. The small patches of white are cloud tops, soaring above the main, colourful cloud layer. Image from NASA's Juno spacecraft during its 38th close approach to Jupiter on 29 November 2021, processed by Kevin Gill (@kevinmgill.bsky.social)
A complex, swirling pattern of lighter and darker clouds. One large system, angled to the upper left in this scene, is a tawny brown colour and is elongate. Another, more circular storm system is at lower centre, and is a grey–greenish colour. The background swirls are various shades of grey to blue; small, white features dot the scene.

Today in 1992 at the Nevada Test Site, the United States conducted DIVIDER, a low-yield (less than 20 kilotons) underground nuclear weapon test. Bipartisan legislation imposing a 9-month test moratorium signed by President George H.W. Bush 9 days later made this the last full-scale US test—to date.
An official color photograph showing the canister containing the DIVIDER nuclear test device hanging from a tall crane and attached to thick diagnostic cables before being lowered into the test shaft, located under the temporary tall semi-enclosed tower in the background (erected to protect the open shaft and hide it and test preparations from overhead eyes). An image of the logo for the DIVIDER test, created by Ward Zaelke, showing a caricature of the head of a mostly bald man, his right eye pinched shut (draftsman Larry Smith) while his left eye, which appears a little bloodshot, looks carefully at the divider held in his left hand, which is over the name of the test (the test name is in large light-and dark-green capital letters while the background of the logo is magenta). The words “Los Alamos” are in black on the upper right side of the image.

As I no longer hang out on ex-Twitter, I missed this worrying declaration from the head of the National Nuclear Security Administration last week. This new policy emphasizing building new nuclear warheads rather than maintaining the 3,700 we already have has not been debated or approved by Congress.
A September 14, 2026, tweet from Brandon Williams:

“The era of primarily emphasizing Stockpile Stewardship is over.

Going forward we will be defined primarily as an organization focused on weapons production.”
