My takeaway from this episode is that British policy to Argentina in the SWW centred entirely on securing an uninterrupted supply of bully beef. * Find out all about Argentina in the war in this weeks episode *Fray Bentos: Uruguayan company - overwhelmingly Argentinian beef linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Still very struck by this photo of Stanley Maxted and Guy Byam. Taken the day after they’d escaped over the Rhine from Oosterbeek at broadcasting house. But especially Maxted. He looks exhausted, mentally and physically. Still wearing his mud covered uniform.

No surprises here, theirs was the glory across many column inches during mid September 1944 and on, afterwards, too. But in this week's News of the War, we meet some of the men who made that news reporting possible, too. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Arnhem. We decided the world needed another podcast about Arnhem. So here it is. Not a blow by blow account though, it’s a look at how it was reported in the papers. And I enjoyed it immensely. Give it a try here linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Re watching Michael Woods fantastic 1985 series In Search of the Trojan War on YouTube (good lord this type of documentary is missed) and who should crop up but the Enfant Terrible of 1st Airborne Division - John Hackett. I had missed him on first viewing 40 odd years ago.

The story of Bloody or Edson’s ridge is one of my favourites from Guadalcanal. The Detroit Times has a story from a survivor of that battle… here’s a great USMC archive film of the marines digging and preparing positions on the ridge, shortly before Kawaguchis forces attacked.

Not the most accurate before and after, I didn’t have the 1944 one saved on my phone, so we’re about 70-90m too high up. But it’s the Kall Trail. Unbelievable how the yanks managed to get some tanks down there. The photos don’t show just how steep and precarious it is.

Quite hard to like David Stirling, in this weeks SAS special we picked up a letter written in the 70s, reacting to Stirlings gang GB75. Essentially a military coup if Stirling and his cronies lifestyles were threatened. Adam Curtis covered it in his Mayfair Set film. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
