The beginner could then hand it back to the expert, and the random move work as an advantage if it played mind games with the other expert, even if the random move was weak. Not sure this bears out either but it’s the best I could come up with.

I’ve thought this over, and I think that like, the most that might work is this: two experts are playing, and unbeknownst to one, a beginner starts playing, and the expert still playing gets in their head trying to figure the move out because they think another expert chose it intentionally.

The first place I saw the claim was from Takaya Imamura, former Nintendo employee who served as art director for Star Fox, F-Zero, and Zelda. He worked with Miyamoto, and his comment was that he thought Miyamoto's love of puppet shows really came through, in the context of the Zelda trailer.

For the about half a year I played Fortnite early on, it *really* helped that there were side objectives to tackle every season that didn't require I be good at the PVP parts of the game by and large, so your thought about keeping losers happy really rings true to me.

See I think a TWO game split could make sense so that the latter section could be its own game and have systems to support what it has going on. That part of the game is a nonlinear open world RPG, and we know a lot more about making that sort of game nowadays.
