I interviewed @brlka.com about bringing psychological horror to a punishing platformer w/ Love Eternal, in addition to being uncompromising in art, how difficulty factors into their games, difficulty discourse, and more! Full interview on YT, but here's a nice excerpt: exalclaw.com/love-eternal...

How Love Eternal Dev Toby Alden Approaches The Infinite Spectrum Of Difficulty
"I'm going to make the game I want to make in an uncompromised form because it's what I'm into, which did end up alienating a lot of players. But I also would say, I think that for anyone trying to g...

It's a low probability that you, the person reading this, are one of the 23 people on Bsky who played LOVE ETERNAL. If you watch this trailer and haven't played it, don't read the thread; please just go play the game now. You'll hardly find a work so profound for $8 and 3 to 5 hours of your weekend.

I picked up Love Eternal and completed it in about 4 hours. It's a cool 2d platformer/horror, with some with gorgeous art and haunting music. The story is abstract and subversive, the gameplay is extremely difficult, but I really enjoyed it overall.

3d environment, looked on from a far off elevated angle. a building: university extension, steps leading up to its entrance. in front is a green lawn with four angle paths cutting through to the middle where a fountain is. there are benches on the grass. people are milling about on the steps, paths, grass and sitting on the benches. there is a street to the left and the right and buildings (a theatre, a bookstore, a driving school, etc). blue sky and birds.

Playing all the way through Ecstatica w/ Toby one of the best game experiences of my life. The constant danger and broad, clunky comedy combine into this totally disturbing, queasy atmosphere. Feels like a child's nightmare. Awesome game

I just came out of my first fugue state of playing Love Eternal (@brlka.com) of what I assume will be many more - there's something very special about momentum/hesitation here. Instead of tight mastery it feels more like I'm surrendering to a brutal force of momentum with each leap.

my thoughts (in white notepad) to two posts (on the right in dark)
I think games have always been a mix of derivative and more original work (e.g. if you play action rpgs from the 80s.. some are less inspired than others.

Certainly there's tons of games coming out today that are inspired by life experience - just like Pikmin or Zelda were. And I think it's worth noting that Pikmin and Zelda were *also* made because of the success of 90s PC RTSs, or 80s Adventure Action RPGs -not only directorial life experiences. (And it's also worth noting that even with lots of life experiences, a total lack of game design thinking/experience can lead to a game that is kind of flat, perfunctory, or like a less-vital version of another medium - one needs both)

The other thing is that 'artistic experience' in a game today will inherently look different from the 80s/90s since the economic conditions are different. If one wants to, they could pine endlessly over (Insert 90s/80s game here) never coming back. But I think this kind of thinking is counterproductive, rather, one should look to what's uniquely valuable about the current historical moment since it's impossible to recreate e.g. "Sega of the 90s" or "Sierra of the 80s" etc.The two posts I am replying to
