Yes I agree with both of you on that but I also struggle to see how a stronger focus on climate would help them electorally? For me their biggest problem is a lack of leadership in the details which makes them still come across as a small party.

Would any Green policy on climate enabled to them to win in this seat? Especially when up against a government with a new PM in honeymoon period?

It's a pity that the paper only considered the safety of those people in the car, it would have been interesting to see the results for pedestrians.

Activists have called for female crash test dummies that reflect women's' bodies. But Volvo—a company whose reputation revolves around safety—says that approach is too simplistic. Its new report notes that height, body shape, and weight also affect crash risk. www.volvocars.com/us/media/pre...

I work at the Bottom of Avenue Louise and it's a lot quicker to Midi than the Airport.

Have to celebrate anyone trying to encourage more travel by train than flying but not sure about whether this would benefit anyone people much outside London. Opening the Kent stations or sorting out Euston / HS2 to be delivered more quickly more important.

If we get into panic about any minor change, we're never going to sort out our public services. We also need to get away from being screamish about tax rises. A £10-20 tax increase per month would not be noticed by most. (And that's before we target it).

Any spend we don't have to do is annoying and the Iran war should also be opposed for it's death and destruction. BUT: we need to get sensible on financial impacts: per person, £12 billion equates to £170 a per person. It's about 1% of total government spend. www.ft.com/content/2cb1...

okay so this anecdote in Margaret's obituary has me crying because this is exactly what it's like being in tech and trying to anticipate failures and having men basically tell you you're being hysterical and then you have to fix it later
"the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with the command module simulator at the
Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight - which
crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch P01 during flight.
She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were integrated into the program. This was an early example of "defensive" programming, the

I agree, this is causing the biggest fear from Digbeth that the cultural businesses lose their home and they can't find anywhere else or forced out from the area.

Businesses impact could be mitigated, a lot rent anyway. Just needs a master plan to work out how to support them and works proceed quickly unlike HS2 related tram.

Eric Claxton's guiding principle when designing Stevenage was that separating bikes and cars was fine, if: - Their routes ran parallel - For every metre the bikes gave up in gradient, the cars should give up two - If necessary, you make the cars go further not the bikes Because cars have ENGINES

I've always been puzzled by the police reluctance to get involved in traffic offences happening right in front of them. I don't think this should be an arrestable offence but a quiet word from the police would be good.

The building safety crisis has put huge costs onto the industry through rework. People living in homes have had lives uprouted, made it difficult to move. So yes you might safe money up front with the less regulations but the consequences can easily out weigh that benefit

John Paddington @padders123.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That's not too say we need better regulation, but less regulation isn't a positive ambition. Linked to this our biggest problem as a country is we don't have strong enough enforcement.

John Paddington @padders123.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Find it amazing that politicians still think that cutting regulation in the housing industry is a good idea where we will have an ongoing crisis with thousands of people still living in unsafe flats due to poor regulation and enforcement.

With one tweak this thumbnail looks like a @killjamesbond.bsky.social bonus episode on a thriller where @postoctobrist.bsky.social is playing a Soviet spy who uses her skills to lure the naive bureaucrat played by @garethdennis.uk into emptying a UK Treasury account before she betrays him to MI5.
A Youtube thumbnail with the title "The Enemy" on a red background and the HM Treasury logo on the left. On the right is a black and white photo of November Kelly with impeccably neat hair and a collected professional look in a skivvy and suit jacket as well as Gareth Dennis with messy hair in a woollen jumper with a surprised look.

Explanation - one of the main concerns was that any Jewish member, or even any synagogue, supporting a two state solution, would be considered racist (because one of those states would be Israel). That's most left wing UK Jews. The amendment to address that concern was voted down.

A lot to do come by public transport and yes a lot drive. Coaches though are generally full and organised from major cities: it's one of the most sustainable forms of transport we have. Biggest challenge arguably still is rubbish and it's something they're working on, but it's hard.

Huge cultural export, creates a lot of soft power for the UK. The festival itself doesn't make huge amount of money: £7 million in profits, £2.7 million went to charity. Which is very low when you consider 210,000 people attended.

John Paddington @padders123.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Also I've said before, if we're drawing these kind of graphs, then we should also consider things like what happens when you age out of young person's railcard and get the train to work.

My view on this is that yes it should be made smoother and less of impact but also it's frustrating that how this has got a lot of attention, when it affects the wealthy. Yet there are things very similar linked to universal credit that don't get the same attention.

This, but also: - people start car pooling for the school run - parking up at a takeaway instead of going through the drive thru - Not driving to parkrun

John Paddington @padders123.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Also I know a lot of people will say London has a higher cost of living but also we shouldn't be expecting people employed directly and indirectly in the public sector to absorb that cost of living through low salaries to let the wealthy pay less tax.

I'm intrigued why Hammersmith and Fulham aren't exploring a workplace parking levy. It's probably a much fairer way of raising some of their funds they need.
