Hint: its because of the horrible double standard between those the ruling class decide can make that sort of content and those that cannot. Its a means of control and oppression.

You should be asking why Rockstar gets to do this and doesn't run into any issues with payment processors, while the rest of anyone drawing or writing "explicit content" on any platform have so much trouble getting paid

It’s really fucked up we told generations of kids they had to take out personal loans in order to improve their lives as we cut funding to schools and when that turned out to be bullshit the general consensus has been “fuck those kids”

For real. I did everything we were told we were supposed to do to improve our lot in life. I'm a "success story" except for the student debt that makes it impossible for me to save for retirement. I will most likely end life like I started it; in poverty.

the Cornell case should make us question prosecutors and police all the time: the same DA offices discounting college students’ sexual assault cases (the lacking investigations, the disbelief) are happy to jail countless women for far less, day in and day out, when most people aren’t watching

What's wild is seeing people finally engage the philosophy of restorative justice...for this guy. Not in the context of prison abolition or the incarceration of Black men, of the Black Lives Matter movement or defunding the military police state Nope let's talk about it for a rapist YouTuber

It's YouTube, you can go watch whatever cancelled person you want, no one is going to know. But that's not enough, right? People need to be reassured that doing this counts as being a good person, mainly because there's probably not much else to count

There are a lot of reasons it's discouraging but I think one is that these kinds of comments signal the limit of someone's commitment to solidarity, and that limit is "being continuously socially validated for the things I was passively watching anyway"

it's often because people don't care about what happens to the bodies of people they've deemed kind of disposable based on what they do for a living. Like when people get office jobs they worry about their physical therapy, but when people work with their hands it's "well what did you expect"

sorry i get fired up about this but like once a month the "why doesn't everyone become [trade]" conversation picks up despite very few of you actually knowing what it feels like to be one (also i would love if someone who actually knows what it's like to work like that wrote about it.)

also, doing that work is fucking hard. My body is irreparably damaged. I suffer from mild to severe chronic pain problems because of it. There are few safety nets for manual labourers, and if we want more of them how do we change the environment for workers so many deem as less than?

ask yourself how many times you see people write long threads about how annoying it is to have a man working in their apartment building, who never wonder how hard it is to wake up at 5, work for 12 hours, and come home to read people talking down to you about your place in the world.

talked about this before and again, i'm speaking as a third generation journeyman trades worker, but working in trades is not something that any of the people who write these pieces, or honestly most of you, respect at all. It's perceived as something you do when all the "good" options are gone.

I agree that we have to have conversations about rehabilitation if we're to pursue restorative justice. But why do we demonstrate concern and fight for the rapists when we've barely begun the work of supporting victims? Why all the effort for THIS man? ...because you don't know how to let go?

So you bought a book of his and now you're bummed. OK? Why do you make intellectual authorities out of dudes who have a YouTube channel? why is it so difficult to read an essay and go "cool, I agree" and move on? why does fandom and admiration become part of the intellectual engagement?

It's true that rehabilitation and change and growth and all of these things should be factors in how we gauge whether or not someone deserves to move on from their crime. But accountability starts with taking responsibility, which Gellar sought to avoid for a decade.

I would love it if we could spare even an ounce of this concern for the victims who have been forced out of game spaces for speaking up. I have never once seen a writer try to reconcile how we've forced people out through gossip, ridicule and lack of compassion

"What to do about Jacob Geller" I dunno, move on? A single person's work is not so integral and sacred that we need to wring our hands about what to do with it. There are a lot of people whose work you could be reading or listening to. Stop making icons out of random dudes. is that so hard

Without a doubt, Cornell is responsible too. Every institution involved needs to be held accountable. We can’t let them point at each other to get themselves off the hook.

The DA is still responsible for every decision his office made. They used Cornell’s summary against Jane Doe without ever asking for the full statement. They also decided against assigning the appropriate detective to her case to conduct their own interview.
