Breaking: A federal judge just denied DOJ's request to unseal Ghislaine Maxwell grand jury materials — and called out Trump officials for misrepresenting their value. "[T]he public … might conclude that the Government's motion for their unsealing was aimed not at 'transparency' but at diversion."

I was listening to a US economist t'other day who said, 'When we see the validity of the data coming into question, that's when you need to worry'. A couple of days later... Trump fires the head of the independent stats body. We'll never see a negative report again. Or a downgrade. #TrumpSlump

'Metal', and the 'heavier' end of the musical spectrum in general, has long been - in my experience - the most accepting, genial and open fanbase. Over two decades of festival going, by far the best atmospheres have been at 'metal' events, as compared to the likes of Glastonbury/Reading etc.

I mean, there are very few questions in modern British life on which you would get 75% support. And something so easy to do, too. If there is are legitimate reasons *not* to, then the government should make that argument (there may be), but otherwise... 75% support?! A political no-brainer.

As a local, this is pretty accurate, I'd say (they have a lot of techie stuff giving data). There are a *lot* of alternative 'back' routes in Somerset, but the problem is, when you get anywhere near the festival, most are closed.

Being uninvited from the White House caused Rand Paul to lose a lot of the respect he had for Donald Trump that Trump’s two impeachments, insurrection, four criminal indictments, criminal conviction, and sexual abuse damages verdict did not cause him to lose. Got it.

There is the potential for misuse in *all* these things. And quite frankly, I think the government is probably more trustworthy than a tech bro social media billionaire. But there you go, thinking out loud.

Also, it is naive to think - should they wish - any government department could not assemble all of your details pretty bloody quickly. An ID card is, in my opinion, simply an evolution of thingslike a passport, or NI card, in the same way a phone replaces an address book or wallet.

They are also, most likely, on social media too - another absolute bohemouth of personal data, and as we've seen (alleged) in the past, are not always totally trustworthy with such information... Yet ID card opponents still sign in every day.

For example, folks crying about their 'civil liberties' will, most likely, carry around a smartphone that holds basically every detail about their life - including bank details - quite happily. I don't think the government has the skills to utilise such data as well as a mobile phone company.

The age-old debate over ID cards seems to have resurfaced. Now, in an ideal world, *of course* we wouldn't have them. It does seem over-invasive, instinctively. However, I think the pervasive - and so-often sanctimonious - opposition to the idea entirely is often tinged with nonsense...

Can't believe I missed the two-year anniversary of Elon saving the media through micropayments www.niemanlab.org/2023/05/micr...
Elon Musk, April 29, 2023:

Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click.

This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article.

Should be a major win-win for both media orgs & the public.
