Columbus used a 15th-century legal doctrine to colonize and slaughter the Indigenous peoples he encountered. And it's still the law in the U.S. today.

An Indigenous People's Day rec: First America from @rebeccanagle.bsky.social traces the roots of US authoritarianism back to the early nation's systematic genocide of native people. Nagle is a skillful storyteller & each episode of First America makes the present legible, as well as the past.

Some customers buy gift messages to go w/their books — earlier this year a customer asked me to send Wendell Berry's poem, "The Peace of Wild Things," along with a gift to their beloved. It's a wonderful poem. I loved typing it out. Thank you for your art, Wendell. #wendellberry #poetry #poems
Wendell Berry's poem, "The Peace of Wild Things", typed in cursive on an Hermes 3000 typewriter.

Here's the poem:

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.Wendell Berry's poem, The Peace of Wild Things, typed on a cream-colored card in a mauve envelope atop the keys of a typewriter. A shaft of sunlight cuts across the card.

The cover of Dolly Parton's 1978 vinyl LP "Heartbreaker." Dolly is wearing a beautiful flowy gown in shades of pink with lace. She's standing with one elbow on a table top, her other hand on her hip, and one leg lifted so that her foot, in a silver strapless high heel, rests casually on another surface. Her legs are bare beneath the gown and she is looking off to the side. Her expression is watchful, expectant.

"O, to take what we love inside, to carry within us an orchard, to eat not only the skin, but the shade, not only the sugar, but the days, to hold the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into the round jubilance of peach." Li-Young Lee #poetry #poems www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43012/...
A photocopied page from a book of poems by Li-Young Lee, in black and white, creased from having been folded. The text on the page is Lee's poem, "From Blossoms." The poem reads:

FROM BLOSSOMS

From blossoms comes
this brown paper bag of peaches
we bought from the boy
at the bend in the road where we turned toward
signs painted Peaches.

From laden boughs, from hands,
from sweet fellowship in the bins,
comes nectar at the roadside, succulent
peaches we devour, dusty skin and all,
comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat.

O, to take what we love inside,
to carry within us an orchard, to eat
not only the skin, but the shade,
not only the sugar, but the days, to hold
the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into
the round jubilance of peach.

There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.
