This morning I went to march in solidarity with musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra who are on strike & fighting for a fair contract that keeps their compensation competitive with their peers & ensures a safe workplace & a meaningful role in artistic hiring decisions. I wish staff had a union, too.
A photo of the user’s shoulder. She is wearing a blue shirt and red jacket, and pinned to the jacket is a pin for TCOWU, The Cleveland Orchestra Workers United, from the 2023-24 attempt to form a union representing the administrative staff of The Cleveland Orchestra. The staff are the only sector of the organization who do not have the benefit of collective bargaining. The musicians, stage hands, hall staff/building engineers, and ticket office each have a collective bargaining unit. The musicians are the largest unit and what they achieve often has some positive impact on staff’s compensation and benefits.
Arts labor is labor, and these musicians are the best at what they do, and they should be compensated for that skill and talent and hard work.

One of the hardest parts of being COVID aware & seeing airborne illness an issue of justice is that even when a mask requirement makes an event accessible, I can’t really relate to those only “willing to mask” as a one-off. I can access the event =/= I can build meaningful community at the event.

39th year opened with a weekend away in SE Ohio in a quiet little cabin for some hiking and board games with my sister
On the hike to Old Man’s Cave in Hocking Hills, looking down the gorge with the stream running through it and the ledges covered in greenery. From the upper lip of the gorge looking down at the upper falls, on the trail to Old Man’s Cave in Hocking Hills. The small water fall lands in a green pool that continues into a stream that has carved this massive gorge in the black hand sandstone of these hills.

I think the Platner thing hit me so hard bc it was one of the most protracted, widespread acts of misogynist gaslighting from my own side that I've seen. We were presented with an obvious violent scumbag who was constantly lying (badly, might I add) and told we were crazy for not loving him

Happy Pride, friends. The feminist choir I’m part of marched & sang at Pride in the CLE yesterday, which was a beautiful celebration of queer joy & acceptance. One of our songs builds to a moment where we shout “Trans Rights are Human Rights!” & it was wonderful to hear the crowd roar in return.
The front of a house with a glassed in front porch, a flagpole mounted at one side. From the flag pole hangs the Progress Pride flag, a variant of the traditional rainbow Pride flag with stripes representing the trans pride flag and the intersectionality with the fight for racial equality and justice in a chevron at the hoist to suggest forward movement. The black stripe of the chevron also takes on a dual meaning to represent those living with HIV/AIDS and those we have lost due to HIV/AIDS

A controlled experiment just proved the effect doesn't reverse when you stop using it.
3,302 creative ideas. 61 people. 30
days of tracking.
Researchers split students into two groups. Half used ChatGPT for creative tasks. Half worked alone.
For five days, the ChatGPT group outperformed on every metric.
Higher scores. More ideas. Better output. Al was making them better.

My pansy orchid (miltoniopsis hybrid) has thrown a flower spike and its blooms just opened this week. I’ve read online that these are often more fussy orchid types so I’m feeling really good about how much foliage growth this plant has given in the year I’ve had it and that it gave me a new spike
An orchid with a flower spike with three flowers opening on it. The blooms are a deep purple/red with some white striations and a yellow throat. Most of the white markings are on the bottom sepal extending from the yellow throat. This is a pansy orchid, or miltoniopsis hybrid. It grows like oncidium orchids, with pseudopods covered by blade shaped leaves.

Hasbro have apparently hired a notorious union-busting firm in response to the Magic the Gathering Arena teams attempt at unionisation - Reddit mods have deleted the post If you haven't please sign the unions petition actionnetwork.org/forms/uwotcl...
A Reddit Post

Hasbro just hired a notorious union-busting firm
News
I've been tracking the NLRB filing for the new Arena Union (UWOTC-CWA) since they announced on Monday. The devs gave Hasbro until this Friday (International workers day) to voluntarily recognize them.
In response, Hasbro hired a well known union busting firm Fisher Phillips, to oversee this debacle.
WoTC also responded to the news with this statement which is riddled with anti union wording (in my opinion) such as the "we are a family" vibe and also "direct relationship with our employees"
Hopefully, Hasbro/WoTC is just using this firm as a "how to not screw everything up" instead of actually attempting to fight the imminent union.
Anyways, please support your devs in their efforts to unionize.

So many people urge us to vote if we are dissatisfied with our democracy. And yes voting matters. But as today’s Supreme Court ruling tells us, it’s not that simple. Not everyone who should have the right to vote can exercise that right.

Please don’t paint your masonry basement walls with drylok, it’s a bitch to get off and can cause your bricks/clay tile to disintegrate when ground water cannot evaporate through like it’s meant to. This message is for my home’s previous owner.
The corner of a basement, with some of the brick and clay tile slowly being exposed from a coat of white drylok waterproof paint. There is a glass block window, and efflorescence is visible in some of the paint. Efflorescence is a mineral buildup on brick or clay tile from when ground water passes through the masonry and evaporates, leaving behind mineral deposits. More of the clay tile has been revealed, including some which have suffered spalling- when the face deteriorates because water cannot evaporate out of the brick and is able to break up its structure due to being trapped by the paint on the surface. The same basement room, at night, with laminate paper over about a third of the wall. The paper is keeping a coat of masonry-safe chemical paint stripper from drying out. This will sit for a day and be scraped off, hopefully with all the paint and efflorescence as well. I’ll continue the process for the rest of this space, neutralize the brick after the stripper, and then I should be able to repair any mortar and paint the brick with lime wash- a mineral based paint that is water permeable and therefor safe for this application.
