Exactly this. I was once invited to be interviewed for an article about this along with my mom, and why on earth would I subject myself to that. I'm sure she would have been THRILLED to have an audience though.

Nah, that's the purpose of tests. The purpose of essays is for students to learn to make connections and form arguments using the raw data that they got from their lectures and textbooks.

I dreamt that I spent 7.5 million mana to raise Jaheira from the dead, only to learn that she might be a TERF. I asked Jeremy Renner on Bluesky whether the rumours were true and he blocked me

Hate it when you see what you think is a cool bird and you look it up later and it’s called like the Common Dumb Asshole. “Birders throughout history have hated its guts. It can’t even fly right.” I thought I saw an interesting guy.

Most jokes with puns in them rely on a slightly obscure word or idiomatic phrase, which made them very hard to explain to ESL students. I loved this joke because it used very simple language and the pun works both ways! The other one I liked was "Why are you never hungry in the desert?"

The Message From Deep Space. You interpret little mathematical blips from a meteorite, starting from 1+1=2 and eventually creating an entire world. It has its flaws but it's a remarkable achievement.

I also hate the phrase "mask off" because it's usually used to refer to the same people who hate masking for COVID, so my first thought is always, "of course they aren't wearing a mask, they hate public health measures, why are we even talking about this"

The videos I've seen could only ever imagine a white, straight viewer. "There's a small chance that someone you work with might be gay! If you happen to meet one of these people, don't panic! Just treat them like you would treat someone you already know. It's actually not that hard with practice :)"

This reminds me of when I was playing D&D in the 90s and was told that "everybody in the entire world speaks the Common Tongue, and then members of different fantasy races speak their racial languages." Even as a college student I was like 🤔

Every essay in that book affected me on a cellular level. On a day when I felt I had to travel in camouflage to protect myself, Dillard's attention to the gifts of nature felt like a precious secret, a connection to the holy. Rest in power, Annie. I will never forget what you showed me.

In 2018, I was traveling to the US for a wedding. For months, I had nightmares and panic attacks about crossing the border. I had to choose my reading material carefully in case they searched my bags and found something too "queer" or "political". I eventually chose Teaching a Stone to Talk.

Normally you don't add the feminine marker to past tense verbs in French, but under very specific circumstances you can get a word with two é's in a row AND a feminine marker, which once led to me staring for several confused minutes at a hair dye box that said "créée"

I have always hated the politics of his stories (not even necessarily the sexual politics, though not NOT those). "That homeless person you just stepped over in the street is babbling to himself because he's the King of Faerie and too pure for this world" has some gross fucking implications!!

I hadn't seen #1 or #2 either. In the old days, I always submitted paper time sheets, which I had to meticulously fill out hour by hour in pen. Now it's all shitty broken HR apps. Rich ladies will declare that #7 are pilates socks! I laughed when I took my first pilates class and could reuse mine.

An online job application with two "Qualifying Questions". The first is "Do you get energy from working with a variety of people?" It has an asterisk, meaning it's a required question. The second is "Do you consider yourself adaptable?" No asterisk this time for some reason. In both text boxes I typed No

As a kid who loved stickers (and as an adult who still does), I think it's something about the texture/colour contrast? Here is a smooth surface doing nothing special, and then suddenly, a circular shape with a design on it! If you touch it you can feel a little ridge! Now a rectangular one!

Sure, but you interpreted Cliff's reply as "don't go to any trouble" and I read it as "toast is what I actually want to eat", i.e. the dance was only on one side. Of course Cliff can speak for himself, but in my own experience I try to short-circuit the game rather than play it "differently."
