The Passing of the Forest by Richard Wolfe will be out in all good bookstores from 8 October. Read more and see sample pages: oratia.co.nz/general/the-... #oratiabooks #newzealandartists #australianartists #art #deforestation #dickfrizzell #newzealandlandscape #RichardWolfe #ThePassingoftheForest
Cultural and art historian Richard Wolfe profiles the clearing of native forests in a striking visual history through art, from the nineteenth century to today.
The Passing of the Forest explores how large areas of forests were burned by Māori, and then European settlers — lured to New Zealand by the promise of an inexhaustible supply of timber. It draws parallels with colonisation in Australia, showing how deforestation has impacted on leading artists and thinkers, and explores ways forward to replace what has been lost. Featuring more than 50 works by New Zealand and Australian artists in vivid colour

dioms — the everyday turns of phrase that give a language its character — are a key part of speaking fluently, and te reo Māori is rich in them. The title of this work translates into English as ‘a basket of idioms’.

Drawing on extensive research and consultation with some of Aotearoa’s leading reo experts, including Sir Tīmoti Kāretu and Te Haumihiata Mason, teacher and language advocate Hona Black offers a comprehensive guide to more than 180 common kīwaha (idioms).

Each entry is graded for difficulty and supported with clear explanations, along with examples from written sources and examples created by the author.

As with his previous works, He Kete Kīwaha is fully bilingual, with Māori and English presented side by side. With additional space for readers to collect their own idioms, this can become a personal guidebook to enhancing your te reo.

"Storytelling can be utterly imaginative, full of fantasy, a way of sharing legends and fables. It can be grounded in real experience. But storytelling can also be a form of nonfiction, a way of sharing ideas and raising questions, whether in the realm of science or extraordinary figures across time and place, and flora and fauna across the globe.
This book raises a very important ecological question: What is the matter with the sea?"

Aimed at readers 8+ but valuable for anyone with an interest in our Pacific kopu tangata (family), this is one of two inaugural books in the Moana Oceania series created by Oratia Books’ Editorial Director, Carolyn Lagahetau.

Cook Islands children in New Zealand can see themselves reflected in this book, and all readers can learn about life and nature in this part of the Pacific.

Cook Islands – Kūki ‘Airani sets out the seven interconnected pillars that guide Cook Islands life, such as kauraro (respect and obedience to elders) and ‘aka’aka (humility and dignity). There are also sections on education, language, history, environment, art, sport and celebrations — and an exploration of how Cook Islanders in Aotearoa maintain and adapt their culture.

Written in Cook Islands Māori and English by noted author Jean Tekura Mason, the book is illustrated with colour photographs throughout, and numerous pull-out boxes of information make the text easy to access.
