My response to Democratic "centrists," their corporate donors, and their Republican allies who spend their time punching progressives and the left: we are going to take over the party, and we will replace them with fighters actually willing to represent the people and their needs. with Sam Seder

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Rahm Emanuel represents the last vestiges of dying, corporate do-nothing foolishness. He’s not a Democrat. He’s a wealthy, status quo strongly-worded letter in a suit. Anyone who listens to him is digging their own political grave.

This is only somewhat true. The real issue is the Senate Judicial Cmte has a blue slip process where the Senators of that Circuit or Appeals court must also approve of a nominee. This is why you get the 5th Cir. craziness for TX. Cannon seems to have connections with Trump making her problematic.

As someone else said, dinner most nights is like Jazz. Meaning you improvise with what you have, the time allotted, and constraints on who is arriving or leaving and when they do so. It’s almost never follow a set recipe, it’s add or remove entire prep steps or ingredients. bsky.app/profile/grum...

So true. We have chilled Asian noodle bowl or bruschetta chicken for the recipe name, but both have serious complexity and prep changes that are made solely by what time I get off work to start dinner / how much time I have. End result is always tasty but no way an AI is helping that grocery list.

Planning dinner is, for many many many people, about what they have on hand, what they can afford, how work schedules change day-to-day, kids’ complicated schedules, individual preferences. The idea that this just a series of tasks is a huge cultural blindspot — which was my original point.

Also flap meat when the fajita craze of the ‘80s-‘90s hit and moved on to carne asada in the 2000s. Same with sirloin tip (now upsold as picahna) and beef short ribs (used for Korean BBQ and many Asian cuisine favorites) that used to be the cheap meat for bolognese sauce.

This is his classic business move. Others have talked about how Trump simply wishcasts things and tries to make them happen. If you have enough money or control over a large corporation or Presidency, some of it does happen. But then you hit the wall with Iran or Ukraine or gas prices or inflation.

Exactly. The House 119th Congress ceases to exist on Jan 3. The only mucking might be the clerk of the house, but I hope a SCOTUS justice or two would walk over to swear in the Dems over the clerk’s objections. The harder part is getting a consensus on Speaker so a majority approve the first time.

I’ll point out $1600 was for natural gas and included the water heater removal, new one, and install months later once remediation was complete. So… $2k is a little high unless there were other circumstances like needing to retrofit or repair stuff.

Ehhh. Mine was $1600. But the water damage from the old and poorly installed one was $30k…. If you haven’t done so, check your water heater and flush it yearly. Or pay a plumber to come do it if you don’t have tools/knowhow. Way cheaper for $90 plumber than remediation after a slow leak.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse

NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵
OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Staff also reported that time spent in the small metal enclosures is closely monitored, and
detainees are not locked in, even though we observed locking mechanisms on the enclosures.
Figures 11 and 12. Small Metal Enclosures; Observed January 21, 2026

Underneath is a picture of a metal cage that is 4 feet 3 inches wide by 4 feet 3 inches long, and 7 feet 9 inches high. The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.
