Companion animals like cats and dogs are generally a positive for well-being. But with cats, there is a downside — they carry the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can infect humans. It’s been linked to road rage, depression and other mood changes.

A new study looks at the factors that contribute to a country’s well-being, including our feline companions.

Scientist, inventor & women's rights campaigner Eunice Foote died #OTD in 1888. She was the first to demonstrate the greenhouse effect (heat-absorbing properties) of carbon dioxide (CO2), laying the scientific groundwork for #climatechange research. #WomenInSTEM
A warm-toned, sepia-style artistic illustration depicting Eunice Newton Foote, a 19th-century American scientist, viewed from behind in a softly lit laboratory setting. She stands facing away from the viewer, her back to us, wearing a period-appropriate mid-19th-century dress with puffed short sleeves, an off-the-shoulder neckline, and a full skirt. Her dark hair is styled in an elegant updo with soft curls and a decorative comb or ribbon at the back. She holds an open scientific notebook or paper in both hands at chest height, reading it attentively. The background shows a detailed Victorian-era lab interior with wooden shelves, glass apparatus including tall cylinders and tubes, a bell jar, a thermometer or barometer-like instrument, and other scientific equipment on tables and walls, evoking a sense of quiet discovery and early experimental science. The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

#ResistanceRoots Margaret Chung was born on this day in 1889 in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was a medical doctor and philanthropist who shattered racial, gender and social norms in the first half of the 20th century. Her life was defined by her unique role as a military recruiter during WWII. /1
Dr. Margaret “Mom” Chung. Chung rewrote the rules of what an Asian American woman, a physician and a civilian could achieve in 20th-century America. She broke institutional barriers in education and medicine, revolutionized healthcare access for marginalized women, and bridged the divide between Western medicine and traditional Chinatown cultures. Operating outside formal government channels, she built a massive, cross-branch network of military personnel, Hollywood icons and politicians. She served as a clandestine recruitment and vetting resource for the U.S. military. Her behind-the-scenes lobbying helped expand women’s right to serve in the U.S. armed forces. She was also a trailblazing queer icon who proved that strategic brilliance and unwavering patriotism could force even most conservative systems of her era to honor her.
