New preprint! 🎉 How can we measure how the nervous system knows, moment to moment, where the body is as it moves? We introduce a continuous tracking paradigm to measure the hidden dynamics of proprioception—revealing it is faster and more precise than vision during movement. tinyurl.com/yf297k53

Tracking the hidden dynamics of proprioception
Every movement unfolds with a simple question: Where is my body? The nervous system answers through proprioception - the sense of limb position (static position sense) and movement (dynamic propriocep...

New preprint! What the eyes do when searching for a visual target reveals the psychological similarity between objects, just like more classic (but much longer & tedious) tasks like triplet odd-one-out and direct comparison. www.biorxiv.org/cgi/content/... #BRAINFLOW @upcite.bsky.social @cnrs.fr

Eye movements reveal representational geometry
Mental representations are the explanatory construct of the cognitive sciences, but there is no widely accepted characterization of how they cause behavior. Visual representational geometry can be quantified by similarity scores, but almost all methods require an explicit judgment. To examine how representations cause behavior by varying task demands, observers must perform different tasks while continuously reporting similarity, leading to dual-task interference. This study develops scanpaths as an implicit similarity measure, and uses representational similarity analysis to validate it. Observers searched for a target; fixations on distractors may reveal similarity. Similarity was also quantified by an odd-one-out task in the same participants, and ratings from different participants (Jiang et al. 2022). Representational geometries between tasks correlated. A generative model predicted first fixations in novel data. This double validation of the scanpath method opens the door to examining the causality of representations by determining if and how they vary with task demands. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

You think you can(not) multitask? Turns out that the sensorimotor system is flexible and intelligent when perceiving and acting on the environment in parallel. Check out one of the main projects from my @dfg.de funded Walter Benjamin!

Why is touch perceived as weaker during movement? In our new preprint 📝, we examine tactile suppression during reaching. Using optimal control theory, we show that tactile suppression reflects dynamic, uncertainty-dependent integration of forward model predictions and sensory feedback.

Legit super excited about this work coming out. My amazing doctoral student @ben.graphics has been working on an idea to use physically based differentiable rendering (PBDR) to probe visual understanding. Here, we generate physically-grounded metamers for vision models. 1/4 arxiv.org/abs/2512.12307
A teaser figure showing the process of metamers rendered differentially (MRD). Target scene parameters are used to render a target scene. A new scene is initialized from some starting point, and renders are created from this scene. The loss between the initial and target scenes is measured. MRD allows the gradients wrt the loss to be propagated to the scene parameters (e.g. lighting, geometry or material) for gradient-based optimization.

If it looks like online control, it is probably model-based control. New preprint on #PsyArXiv, accepted at #CogSci2024 osf.io/preprints/ps...
Agent-environment loop. a) The agent receives an observation, which may be a noisy or partial version of the environment state. Based on this observation and potentially an internal state, they perform an action, which affects the state at the next time step. b) In online control, the action is directly a function of the observation. c) In model-based control, the agent acts based on an internal state in the form of a belief.
