One of my favourite local views, that.

That was my guess. There are a fair few around here and hear them reasonably often but only my second sighting I think. It was bold as brass.

Reading up about it today, apparently lurking on roads at night is a known feeding strategy for them, the feathery wee mentalists... But isn't it a bit late for nightjars in the UK?

Driving back from gig last night through Dartmoor lanes we had to swerve to avoid a nightjar just sitting in the middle of the road. Went back to check on it as we were worried it may be injured only to see it jump up, scoff a moth attracted by the car headlights and happily flutter off.

They were amazing. A huge textured and layered sound - mainly from trad instruments, but with some electronics mixed in - and Paul Banks is a brilliant front man. Phoenix absolutely rammed. An unexpected development is I came home and immediately started googling harmoniums and shruti boxes...

I seen to do it differently every time. Last time I roasted the squash, blitzed a curry paste with ginger, chilli, cumin , garlic and onion, added that and a tin of coconut milk and simmered for a bit. Was lush.

Just saw them live tonight on the first night of their tour at Exeter Phoenix - they were amazing.

Oh mate - you were there? What a cracking night it was. I've never seen the Phoenix so rammed. Little Grandad were really good too.

Never Knowingly Over-Biked... Taking advantage of the still dry conditions to give the skinny bike a spin on trails that are usually out of bounds for most of the year due to their sogginess. The moor is still as dry as a bone.
Over the handlebar view from my gravel bike of a thin ribbon of heathery singletrack bridleway snaking across the moor.

it's great - We lived a bit further up the coast between Rotterdam and Hoek van Holland. If you get the chance I'd recommend a visit to Rotterdam - modern and a very different feel to other Dutch cities but one of those places which really rewards exploration and the river skyline at night is magic.

Love it there. The harbour wall a bit further up the beach was one of my favourite local surf spots when we lived there (I worked in Den Haag for 3 years in the early 000s). Best surf there is in winter northerlies. Getting changed afterwards was "character building" to say the least!

I did read the other week that the fash tried to set up an anti-RNLI protest in Newlyn. It got cancelled for some unknown reason...

Jon Vernon @onlyindevon.co.uk · 18/09/2026
The RNLI is a remarkable organisation - a blueprint for water rescue services around the world. This should be a source of immense national pride, rather than being dragged into the culture wars by these Neanderthal dickheads who've never lifted a finger to help anyone. Fuck them. #OneCrew

I was reading about recent rescues and the RNLI's amazing outreach and education work in the latest edition of the Lifeboat magazine over coffee this morning and found myself quietly shaking with anger at the fact that these knuckle-dragging thugs are targeting the RNLI in this way.

Jon Vernon @onlyindevon.co.uk · 18/09/2026
Me and some mates did a fundraiser sponsored walk for the RNLI later that year and I've been a supporter ever since - as a regular water user I now have an Offshore membership, and honestly it's worth it for the advice and information in the magazine only.

A close friend of mine and his father died in a boating accident when I was 13 - although the outcome wasn't what anyone wanted, I know the local lifeboat crews put in a superhuman effort into trying to find them and bring them home safely...

Jon Vernon @onlyindevon.co.uk · 18/09/2026
100% this - I've supported the RNLI as long as I remember. If you grow up in a coastal community it's not an overstatement to say it's woven into the fabric of your life - virtually everyone knows a member of the crew or someone who wouldn't be alive without their help...

Hey Karen - all good here thanks. Hope all going well with you? I've not been on here that much lately and not really done any photography for ages to be honest... feel like I've lost my creative mojo but going to try and make more of an effort now that Autumn is setting in.

Have to say that the sort of conditions in your photos are pretty much standard operating mode for that route. I've walked it precisely once in bright sunshine in the 16 years we've lived here and to be honest it felt a bit weird...

Anyone I know here ridden the West Kernow Way? Considering it in the next few weeks but will only have 3 days. Suspect it may be pushing it a to attempt the full 148 miles given I'm not long recovered from injury, so thinking of focussing on the northern loop. www.cyclinguk.org/routes/long-...

The intentions are fairly clear but can anyone think of a historical parallel where an industry has called for *more* regulation of it's activities whilst simultaneously generating a general global panic about the safety of it's own products? Because, I have to be honest, I'm struggling here...

I have no idea how it came about, as he wasn't Scottish, but my Scouse grandad used to get the Sunday Post, lovingly save the Broon strips and put them in a big ring binder folder for me to read when we visited. One of my earliest, and happiest memories is reading them with him.

Turbo for the hill, turn it off and use gravity on the way down. The one we have is a Cube Reaction Hybrid. Originally RRP was £2k but we got it for £700 second hand

I had same concerns about servicing / longevity but the batteries are getting better all the time and there is a decent service network for the reputable motors (Bosch, Shimano etc) - just don't buy one of the awful cheap e bikes which weigh the same as a tank and go on fire for fun.
011
Jon Vernon @onlyindevon.co.uk · 11/09/2026
I think that would be fine - probably around 40 minutes riding I would guess? Ours has a Bosch motor and 500kwh battery much gives about 50 - 60 miles range in mixed riding but a lot less (around 25) if you stick it in turbo all the time (ahem).

Honestly I'm sure you wouldn't regret it. This one was a bit of a bargain - Cube Hybrid which would have originally retailed at over £2K new which we picked up second hand locally for £750 with only 150 miles of use. It weighs a tonne and looks like a Dutch shopping bike but absolutely rips.
