So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

Today’s engineers are far better systems thinkers than I was when I graduated from school. But I was a much better transistor thinker.

What do you mean by systems thinker?

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.

I’m not seeing this talked about a ton, but in regards to MN public schools there is a constitutional amendment to get people to vote yes on that will increase distribution from a very large pot of money. (It would go from 2.5% of dividends/interest to 4.5% of full market value).

I voted for Sanders twice in primaries. I did so fully aware that the vast majority of my Black family and friends did not trust him. i was curious about the logistics of this. they. utilized rec centers throughout the nyc boroughs! another huge win for public parks and services departments.
The program was hosted at the Kwame Ture Recreation Center in the Bronx, Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Brooklyn, Highbridge Recreation Center in Manhattan, Al Oerter Recreation Center in Queens and Greenbelt Recreation Center on Staten Island. Participating children also received free NYC Parks Recreation Center memberships, with more than 100 new memberships issued throughout the evening.
In a survey of participating parents, families shared how they spent their time:
• 24% enjoyed some "me time."
• 19% enjoyed a date night.
• 18% dined at a local restaurant.
• 12% went shopping.
• 8% spent time with friends or family.
• 5% visited a cultural institution.
• 5% relaxed or caught up on sleep.

What Kids Had to Say
• Wyatt, 6, who arrived crying and initially did not want to stay: "I want to go back up and do more!"
• Zariza, 9: "I had a very fun time. My favorite part was bracelet making."
• Noah, 11: "I liked the robotics."

Not that this is the most important part of the impact, but it looks like a lot of those activities the parents undertook pumped some money into the economy too.

As someone who works with parks and recreation, this kind of drop-off program is already being offered in a lot of places! Often they're even called
"parent's night out." I've run a few of them myself.
Fantastic that this project was so well coordinated and that they waived the cost of this one--the ones in my area are usually ten or twenty bucks, and usually just happen at a single site, especially around Valentine's Day or some other holiday that families are likely to want childcare for. Just don't think that this is the first or only program like this: look up your local parks and rec calendar and you may find the same thing in your area.

Max is the authority. Contrary to the story, it only affects one city, Oak Grove. Also, this doesn’t affect your ability to early vote AT ALL. You can early vote in-person starting Friday; every county has at least 1 location. Some cities also open then; others on Oct. 16, though some won’t have any
