Very cool that Shopify’s CEO thinks the poor should have far less of a vote than the rich. Still worth that ad read money, folks?
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke says “good system.” In response to the following proposal:

“Interesting... what about weighted voting proportional to the level of income tax you pay? (no income tax paid - O vote, $1-100k - 1 vote, $100-200k 2 votes and so on... cap it at 5 votes for $500k+. For those that constantly complain about the wealthy not paying tax/fair share they'd have nothing to worry about right? Why not reward representation of taxation and build a democracy around those that foot the bill?”

Update: well that’s wild y’all. Filter on top is a clean, unused one fresh out of its packaging. Filter on bottom was the same when I installed it yesterday evening; this is what it looks like after roughly 24 hours of HVAC in Chicago’s blanket of wildfire smoke.
Photo of two HVAC filters. The top one is clean white, while the bottom is a dark, dingy gray.

New on Adobe.Design: a short piece by me on using grade to elevate typography. Grade before might at first seem like weight, but where weight serves to differentiate (adding emphasis and contrast), grade’s purpose is to unify (bringing consistency to text that looks different when it shouldn’t).

Keeping type consistent in changing conditions

Christophe Plantin printed a number of school editions, including Virgil’s Aeneid, with wide margins & generous line spacing for students’ notes. This copy is especially remarkable: it belonged to his grandson, the young Balthasar I Moretus. Judging by his aannotations, he was a diligent student!

Sorry bskyers, I keep forgetting to post the Okay Type sketches here. Unhelpful blurb in the alt text. See more recent sketches at okaytype.com/sketches. Now back to the doom scrolling...
More Chicagoish sketches. A study based on the masthead of the late 60s Chicago Magazine masthead. No, not that Chicago Magazine. This was a different one that eventually turned into the Chicagoan (no, not that Chicagoan, and not the other Chicagoan, a third and entirely different Chicagoan). Confusing. Anyway, this style is great. I’d call it Industrial Mod. A little jet set, a little midwest modern. Like Miller & Richard’s Grotesque No. 10 meets Aldo Novarese’s Microgramma.

Just the type of thing to find in our collections: a sheet with rows of characters probably printed as a working proof to assess wear & damage. This would explain why no frisket was used: the sheet was not a type specimen intended for presentation to potential clients. #bookhistory #rarebooks 📚💙📜

Metal type foundries used to cast their names into non-printing spacing material. When I find it in the shop I pull it aside. Barnhart Bros. & Spindler (BB&S) and Western (WTF) were Chicago-based foundries.
