Most text rendering middleware for games only supports `kern` table kerning, but most fonts only ship with GPOS kerning data, so text can be badly spaced even if the same font looks fine outside the game (This might be my single biggest criticism of Marathon, the screen says ‘EXFIL TRA TED’)

I spent over a year designing this font license (& almost 5 years refining it), with gamedev as a primary use case. Just about every indie foundry I know is actively trying to improve this stuff, despite Monotype repeatedly setting the font industry’s collective goodwill on fire ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Available now: MD Thermochrome v0.4 adds over 100 new icons to the typeface, all of which respond to weight and italic angle just like every other glyph. Legibility not guaranteed www.futurefonts.com/mass-driver/...

A handful of key glyphs (lowercase a, asterisk, ampersand, capital R, superscript 1, percent sign) from MD Thermochrome, showing the visual language of the typeface. It’s a dotmatrix-style typeface made from circles and rounded horizontal lines, which grow and shrink to form the multiple weights.

A thin status bar at the top shows the player’s current location, the time, and the moon phase. The tile-based play area takes up most of the screen. Below it is a panel in three sections: a status area, showing the player’s health, XP and current target; a log of recent events; and a list of nearby items and their directions relative to the player.

The design language is very minimal, with white text on a black background and thin dark grey lines used sparingly to delineate UI areas.
