Just a reminder that if you follow @aimod.social you can see which accounts are using AI, so you can do whatever you want with that information (and also tag accounts yourself). It allows you to customize and toggle what you want to be notified about which takes the form of a banner (see image 2).
a screenshot of the AI labeler bot's toggle options for notifying you whether posts are AI assisted, AI modified, whether the user has an AI avatar or banner, uses occasional or frequent AI imagery. An example of the tag in use, for your typical occupy democrats type. below the bio you see the label "User - Occasional AI Imagery"

Another addition to the 'generative AI energy use is small when you compare it to something bigger so what's the problem' series, this most recently from Hannah Ritchie's substack. This reply from @sashamtl.bsky.social is informative archive.ph/wip/lNoKX www.linkedin.com/posts/sashal...
Electricity use in the United States is about three times higher than in the UK, so ChatGPT prompts are an even smaller piece of the pie. Ten searches per day would come to 0.09% of per capita electricity generation, while 100 searches would be 0.9%.

Unless you’re an extreme power user, asking AI questions every day is still a rounding error on your total electricity footprint.View Dr. Sasha Luccioni’s graphic link

The "3 Wh per ChatGPT query" estimate is back and haunting my social media feeds! 🧟‍♀️

First of all -- that number is a back of the envelope calculation 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. We don't know much about the model underpinning ChatGPT, how big it is, what hardware it's running on, nor how much energy it's using. 💡

Second -- even if it is true, or close to being true, the 𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲. We are switching out technologies that worked well for decades to new, shiny ones that use orders of magnitude more energy, and that comes with a cost. It's not just a matter of asking ChatGPT a question or 2, but also using genAI for searching the web, drafting emails, and generating images and video.🔌

So please don't listen to people who are loudly proclaiming that this "isn't an issue". We don't know the answer to that question -- and actually, there is no single answer to that question, since every gram of CO2 and Wh of energy matters in the fight against climate change. 🌎

What we need is:
- More 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 about the energy and GHG emissions of all in production AI models, right now. 🔎
- More 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and legislation to incentivize tech companies to choose more efficient models and truly renewable energy sources 🌱
- More 𝗯𝘂𝘆-𝗶𝗻 from the AI community (as opposed to this truly c…

"Tech is neutral" is really just the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument reused. Sure, guns don't have agency. But they have what's called affordance - they are designed to make killing as easy as possible, which makes murder a viable* solution for a greater range of problems.

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight. 1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms" 2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral 3) How tools are productized is not neutral [rant]

This is such a brilliant example of how "cheap thing" does not always = 'fast transition' Battery packs themselves are swelling in design size - resulting in excessively expensive EVs (because car companies make more $$ per unit by severely oversizing products).
On the vehicles themselves, battery packs keep getting bigger, which makes achieving price parity harder. Average EV battery pack sizes globally are rising at around 10% per year and some automotive segments will require battery prices well below $100/kWh to reach price parity. Full-sized pickup trucks in the US, for example, have very large battery packs, which pushes out the point where they’re fully price competitive. Even at today’s low prices, the battery pack alone on a top-spec Chevy Silverado electric pickup costs around $20,000 based on BNEF estimates.

There’s an interesting parallel here with internal combustion vehicles. From 1985 to 2005, the average fuel economy of passenger vehicles in the US was flat, despite technical improvements in engine efficiency over this period. Much of the efficiency improvements were offset by a switch to larger, more powerful models. A similar trend is happening now for EVs, with range and power expectations rising.

Access for people who use wheelchairs in Paris is ridiculously bad.
Most establishments are not accessible. Even the ones that advertise that they are accessible.
I'm reminded of the french tourist who asked me why he saw so many people in wheelchairs in Iceland.
I told him that in places with good accessibility they are able to go around the city and live their lives.
There are very few people in wheelchairs visible in Paris.
And it's not because they don't exist. It's because they are not allowed to participate.
