I asked the staff how many types of chili they have. Texas red, I said, of course. Cincinnati, I'm sure. Chile Verde, white chili, classic. But do you have Frito Pie as well? Am I missing any? Do you have any others? Are you out of any at the moment? Please, give it to me straight. Sir, said the shy employee, this is a Sweetgreen.

I wanted to scream. I could tell I was annoying him. I know it is, I said. I know it is, son, but I also know you have some chili back there. Stop lying to me.

He hesitated, started his sentence five times, then replied, I have some white chili my mom packed me for lunch that I didn't finish. How much? I asked. How much did she pack me or how much is left? He said.

No, I said, how much to take it off your hands? Your mom's chili is in demand, son. I'm begging you.

$4.42 will do, he said. I paid in pennies. He hated me. There was no one else around. He went in the back and brought out the chili. He told me to eat it there because he needed to bring home the Tupperware. I thanked him again and again. The chili was delicious. It didn’t need to be heated or seasoned. It didn’t need anything. It was perfect exactly how it was, in a Sweetgreen on a Tuesday evening, slightly buzzed, in love with the hell of the world, eating the last of a new friend's chili as he counted my pennies, his pennies. They're his pennies now.

Was in high school. First tower fell during second period, the TV was on and we saw the second fall live. A kid called in a bomb threat that afternoon. The next day there were two bomb threats. Each time the entire school was moved to outdoor bleachers. This happened for months.

labyrinth.”
The Tomb Prospector reached into his pack and retrieved a small, wooden box - dark, but ornately carved
and smooth, its hinged lid sealed shut with a small brass lock, the shape, of course, of an eye. He eased it
open and within its lead interior was a swaddled parcel. He began to peel open the thick, waxed linen - the
edges were frayed, and the cracks in its sheen were lined with a smudged, sickly red. The final layer greeted
them with a breath of raw, ripe blood. Pungent enough for her to stumble back and for his lips to curl with
something that wasn’t quite or entirely human. Beneath, steaming in the dark and gleaming softly pinkish
in the damp light was something soft, and red. Small, maybe the size of his hand. Thin, wet, translucent
skin holding in a sack of fine dark lines and not-quite-yet bones that quivered with every breath the Tomb
Prospector took. The movement was not its own. In the melted spread of its bulbous, domed skull, the
Chorister could even see the dark marbles of its unformed eyes.
“Do you know what it is?” The Tomb Prospector asked. The Chorister looked at him, at the something
brittle and hopeful about him she couldn’t name. If you put a little bird into his hands, broken, half dead,
picked from the nest by crows; she was certain he would make it live. She bit her lip, glanced back at the
unborn thing within his box, for precious things.
“No,” she lied.

My kid and I have been reading THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH at night, and tonight we finished it. It was a favorite book if mine at her age and I'm happy to report she also liked it. It was witty and smart and funny and loaded with good lessons and was a top tier adventure to boot.
