Wow, so this is actually insane! Check out some of the first data from the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission, capturing the full northern lights oval around the north pole in ultraviolet light. All in daytime, whilst invisible to the naked eye!

holiday fair must-have
1941 article in Ideal Home & Gardening: Make your own GAS MASK CONTAINER To match dress, costume, or coat. photo shows a pair of simple, uh, handbags? pretty cool actually bc just a wastebasket shape, cut 2, with a curved flap on one if them. stitch a loop on the front, then one on the top; draw the latter through the former to hold the case closed. just like early covid cloth masks, you can have one for every stylish fit you wanna sport

not joking, totally want to go into production on these
doesn't every child need a GAS MASK CONTAINER hanging on their school backpack?
i have neither a sewing machine nor any place to put one, but if handstitching was good enough for the mothers of 1941, it's good enough for me

The image shows a thin waxing Moon with a very small crescent just over its edge at right. This is planet Venus. The image was taken 14 September 2026 12:22:20 pm local time, so during day time.

😃Have my particle physics cousins spotted an actual #DarkMatter particle? I'm v excited! The chances of this 16 June 2023 blip just being noise, are about the same as the chance that today is my birthday (which it is not, but it is for some of you). We need more data to know for sure!!!! 🤞🧪⚛️🔭
A slide from a talk entitled "A single event - LZ230616). It shows some plots. I honestly don't know what the axes are, because particle physicists never label their axes in human readable form - one of my pet peeves. But anyway, far away from the main body of data is a tiny dot, something unusual. Is it dark matter? Who knows. But it's definitely something special!

I stayed up for the #lunareclipse despite cloud cover and the sky did in fact clear up during the partial phase! 25 x 2 sec RGB in 300 mm lens at f/4. #astrophotography
Full lunar disk against black background. Most of the Moon appears red and evenly illuminated showing albedo features like mare and rays. To the right a small bright section of the Moon is overexposed and fully white. The separating line is the edge of Earth's shadow and thus part of a larger circle. This shape is different from a crescent phase (as always with lunar eclipses the Moon is actually in a full moon phase).

A bubbling Betelgeuse ⭐️ 🫧 This ALMA image is one of the most detailed views yet of the surface of the iconic star Betelgeuse. The surface is uneven & lumpy, with peaks and troughs originating from giant bubbles of hot gas rising from deep within the star to its surface. 🔭 🧪 1/2
A star’s almost circular shape in various shades of orange, centred against a black background. The edge of the shape has smoothed bumps and extensions, and is a darker orange compared to most of the shape’s interior which is orange to light orange.

The kitty won 🐾
A fluffy black cat with large round eyes lies comfortably on a purple carpet, facing the viewer with a calm, slightly mischievous expression. An open wooden door reveals a softly lit room beyond, but the cat makes no attempt to go through it. The walls are painted in deep purple tones, contrasting with the warm beige light spilling through the doorway. Above the illustration, handwritten text humorously reads: “Great news! After screaming until the human got up to open the door for me, I’ve decided I don’t actually want to go in or out. I just wanted it open.” The scene playfully captures the wonderfully illogical behavior that so many cat owners know well.
