Yesterday I messed with some film nitrate at a collection museum. Got to unspool a reel to an unknown silent film and hopefully made steps to ID it in the future. Very cool experience.

Always a fan of the swings Remedy takes, so I've got Control Resonant on lock once I finish up this playthrough of [REDACTED]. Also cool that Silent Hill: Townfall is pretty good too. Will pick that up later when time permits. And I still have ONE LAST SHOT to look forward to.

Listening to Jill break down her process and inspiration for crafting action that is both impactful and personal to her is what we speak about when saying Action is for Everyone. It's invigorating. Kudos to the nuanced Resident Evil discussion too. A great episode awaits!

2016 really was the inflection point where once BvS drops, now every *single* time Zack Snyder drops a new movie, wars are fought on here. I'm agnostic about his films, wish I loved him more! But we are like on World War 6 of the Movie Wars about him, it's deranged.

I apologize to all Aikido practicioners during my rant about Seagal's performance in MARKED FOR DEATH, i didn't know he was doing that. I do not apologize for criticizing Seagal's performance in said film. But hey, JIN_ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE rocks so it all comes out in the wash.

Outside of ONSLAUGHT not releasing in the NL for God knows why, I really enjoyed being able to talk about a slew of these movies today. Got to witness my first Needledrop Mike Rant, gushed about how much I enjoyed COLONY, and even gave love to Jan de Bont's work in BLACK RAIN.

I may not have gotten to Onslaught this weekend due to international distribution being a pain, but I got my new release action horror fix with COLONY (2026). Scratches a very specific itch with its Resident Evil and SCP-isms that very much worked on me. Solid genre thrills. More to come Sunday.

Dug the Hell out of THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH (2021). Bruno Delbonne's b&w photography and the use of deep shadows is exquisite. I'll always be a sucker for German Expressionism with the moody atmosphere it provides. Didn't realize how much I needed Denzel quoting Shakespeare.

Took Suus to see HOKUM last night. Both of us loved it, no surprise there. What did get me especially was how video game-coded Damien McCarthy’s third feature film was. Heavy trace elements of Silent Hill and even a bit of Alan Wake 2 are embedded in the film’s DNA.

Max Deering @odstspartan.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

There’s no “new” releases this weekend, but GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE and HOKUM are finally out theatrically in my neck of the woods. If nothing else the latter is Suus’s most anticipated of the year. She loves ODDITY, so I really hope McCarthy lands the plane for her.
