X's algorithm is in fact doing what you think it's doing. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Article: The political effects of X’s feed algorithm

Abstract: Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects1. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk’s platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects. Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users’ feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X’s algorithm has persistent effects on users’ current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.Figure 2. ITT estimates of feed-setting changes on engagement and political attitudes. ITT effect estimates of switching the algorithm on and off (in s.d.). Left, effect of moving from the chronological to the algorithmic feed for users initially on the chronological feed. Right, effect of moving in the opposite direction for users initially on the algorithmic feed. For each outcome, the results of two specifications are reported. Blue, unconditional estimates with robust s.e., controlling only for the initial feed setting and, where applicable, pre-treatment outcome levels. Orange: conditional estimates, controlling for pre-treatment covariates using GRFs; 90% and 95% CIs are reported. Numerical effect sizes and P values correspond to the conditional estimates (all tests are two-sided). The unit of observation is respondent. From top to bottom, sample sizes are n = 4,965, n = 3,337, n = 4,965, n = 4,965, n = 4,596, n = 4,596 and n = 4,850. Tests are described in Methods. Supplementary Information Table 2.16 reports the exact numerical point estimates, s.e., CIs and sample sizes for every specification. All outcomes are standardized. Additional results are presented in Supplementary Information section 2. PCA, first principal component from principal component analysis.

The letter from Bill and Hillary Clinton to James Comer explaining their refusal to testify in his Epstein investigation is really remarkable, not like any letter of this genre I've seen. It's signed by them, not a lawyer, and the arguments are not legal ones. Reprinted from their X account:

TIL a new term, "load-bearing delusions", which unifies the commonality between so many issues where I've always been dumbfounded by humanity's refusal to actually ACT against existential threats that seem glaringly obvious to me. It's a tie that binds being COVID Competent, an Eco...
The Hive Mind shares one overwhelming belief, downstream from which all other behaviors flow: COVID is harmless. If that foundational belief shatters- the central tentpole of back to normal which has been supporting a fantasy world since 2021-2022- everything else must be rebuilt from the ground up. It is, as some have put it, a “load bearing delusion.”

But it’s not the first, only, or last load-bearing delusion our society runs on, and that’s why it doesn’t surprise me that Gilligan could write a show so closely matching my experience while not necessarily thinking of my life with Long COVID at all.The idea that we continue burning fossil fuels the way we are- that we can continue expanding fossil fuel infrastructure- that’s a load bearing delusion. Nothing that anyone in government is doing matches anything near the scale of the crisis, and yet everyone walks around grinning and flying and partying like there’s no tomorrow. Hell, there might not be!

Capitalism, unchecked growth and consumption on a planet with finite resources, will lead to a middle-class American lifestyle for all before the world is scorched: load bearing delusion.Capitalism, unchecked growth and consumption on a planet with finite resources, will lead to a middle-class American lifestyle for all before the world is scorched: load bearing delusion.

Everyone gets equal opportunity in the land of the free and the rich are rich because they worked harder than you and the homeless are homeless because they made bad choices: load bearing delusion.

Poor countries are poor because of bad governance, not because of decades of neocolonial pillage and foreign resource control by the first world: load bearing delusion.I could go on.

And for me it’s interesting because, when I hear the words, “back to normal,”- back to normal in the context of COVID, of the lockdowns, of the pandemic, I also hear them in regard to every single one of those other load bearing delusions just listed.

“Back to normal” was never just about forcing you to accept that life was going to be worse from now on, and you better not think about fighting back. You better not demand paid sick leave for the many more days a year you’ll be out sick. You better not ask for legal protections since this new virus might end up disabling you at work. You better not ask for clean air or far UVC. You better not even ask for COVID tests that consistently work.

On Thursday, NPR invited CPAC Chair Matt Schlapp to pay tribute to his friend, Charlie Kirk, which he did, at length.. But he ended up getting angry and cutting the interview short. This is what angered him: www.npr.org/2025/09/11/n...
SCHLAPP: And the other thing that needs to happen is, quite frankly, people in the media - we need to stop villainizing people. You know, people have ideas, and, you know, might not like them. There's a lot of people whose ideas I think are abhorrent. But, you know, would I help them change their tire if they were on the side of the road? Hope I would.
MARTIN: But, you know, on Newsmax, yesterday, you called on leaders of the left to stop normalizing hatred and violence. Are you also calling on leaders of the right to do the same?
SCHLAPP: Everyone should stop doing that, but the only difference is in the age of Trump is that, you know, there has been a outrageous commentary that goes on and isn't stopped...
MARTIN: Two months ago...
SCHLAPP: ...By people...
MARTIN: ...Two elected Democratic state officials and their spouses were shot in Minnesota by a man who had a hit list of 45 elected Democrats he intended to kill. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband attacked in his home, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's official residence set on fire.
This would seem...
SCHLAPP: Yeah, these were...
MARTIN: ...To be an equal opportunity problem, right?

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Here is the transcript of what Zohran Mamdani actually said about the phrase "globalize the intifada." This is his "refusal to disavow it." This is what has people terrified. Just fucking read it. Source: podscripts.co/podcasts/the...
Q: So I wonder what you think about that, about the phrase “globalize the intifada” and what we've seen as some anti-semitism coming from the left-wing protesters.

A: The first thing as you were saying is anti-semitism is a real issue in our city and it's one that can be captured in statistics, the ones that you're citing. It's also one that you will feel in conversations you have with Jewish New Yorkers across the city. And I remember one conversation I had with a friend of mine after the horrific war crime of October 7th. He was telling me that he went for Shabbat services at his temple and he was facing forward when he heard the door open. And he turned back with a chill going up his spine because he didn't know who was coming in. And that's more than a year ago.

And then just a few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a Jewish man in Williamsburg who told me that the same door he would keep unlocked for decades is one that he now locks out of a fear of what could happen in his own neighborhood. And I think that this is something that has to be the focus of the next mayoral administration, is not just talking about it, but tackling it. And these are the conversations that have informed our commitment around increasing funding for anti-hate crime programming by 800% in our Department of Community Safety.

To the question of language that's being used. I am someone who I would say am less comfortable with the idea of banning the use of certain words and that I think it is more evocative of a Trump style approach to how to lead a country. And-
Q: Does that just make you uncomfortable? Like the phrase globalizing intifada. And like the phrase from the river to the sea, does that make you uncomfortable? Or do you think-

A: Okay, those are different. Those are super different.

Q: They're not really.

A: Those are like different genres.

Q: I'm sorry, I'm asking so wrong. Then they're not really different to me. And to some people they are not different.

A: I know people for whom those things mean very different things. And to me, ultimately, what I hear in so many is a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights. And I think what's difficult also is that the very word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw ghetto uprising into Arabic because it's a word that means struggle. And as a Muslim man who grew up post-911, I'm all too familiar in the way in which Arabic words can be twisted, can be distorted, can be used to justify any kind of meaning. And I think that's where it leaves me with a sense that what we need to do is focus on keeping Jewish New Yorkers safe. And the question of the permissibility of language is something that I haven't ventured.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I lived through the end of a civil war -I moved back to Sri Lanka in my twenties, just as the ceasefire fell apart. Do you know what it was like for me? Quite normal. I went to work, I went out, I dated. This is what Americans don't understand. They're waiting to get personally punched in the face while ash falls from the sky. That's not how it happens.
This is how it happens. Precisely what you're feeling now. The numbing litany of bad news. The ever rising outrages.
People suffering, dying, and protesting all around you, while you think about dinner. If you're trying to carry on while people around you die, your society is not collapsing. It's already fallen down.
I was looking through some old photos for this article and the mix is shocking to

Read this excerpt of an interview with Jay Bhattacharya, new NIH director. And do not miss the last graf. Via @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...
On a Nature news article reporting that NIH planned to suspend subawards for foreign collaborations:
"No, that's false. There's going to be a policy on tracking subawards. The NIH and the government should be able to see where the money's going."
"I'm really uncomfortable with this conversation, because you're like, actually spreading rumors that you don't know anything about. ... Nature also is spreading rumors. Halt foreign collaborations, that's not true."
"We're working on the policy, Jocelyn. You shouldn't be reporting rumors. I know there's leaks all over here, but the leaks don't actually reflect what's happening.
Don't write about rumors. It actually makes the things that you and I care about worse.
Like it spreads panic."
Later that day, NIH released a policy that halted future subawards to foreign scientists and said they will need to apply directly for money under a system still in development.

Pritzker: It’s time for us to be done with optimism about their motives. Time to stop wondering if you can trust the nuclear codes to people who don’t know how to organize a group chat. It’s time to stop ignoring the hypocrisy in wearing a big gold cross while announcing the defunding of children’s cancer research… Autistic kids and adults who are loving contributors to our society don’t deserve to be stigmatized by a weird nepo baby who once stashed a dead bear in his car. Our military service members don’t deserve to be told by a washed-up Fox TV commentator, who drank too much before being appointed Secretary of Defense, that they can’t serve their country simply because they are Black, gay, or a woman.
