Finally, we hear from Operations Director/Interim Joint CTU Director, Vicki, on why she feels privileged to be involved in research, and how her career in research and trials has evolved over the years. #ICTD2026
I feel fortunate every day to work in clinical trials. Having worked in the laboratory, on hospital wards asking patients to consider taking part in multiple clinical trials, collecting data and driving engagement in clinical trials; to now being part of teams in many areas of medicine designing and delivering new trials – this is just a real privilege!
I’m proud to be a very small part of a bigger group, delivering answers to research questions that matter to patients across the NHS to improve care, treatment options and provide evidence for all of us to be able make informed choices. - Vicki, OCTRU Operations Director/Interim Joint CTU Director

A great quality assurance (QA) team is vital to ensure the work we do is compliant - Joanna, our Head of Regulatory Affairs and QA has undertaken a huge amount of work in the past year to ensure that our processes are in line with the updated clinical trials regulations & GCP guidelines! #ICTD2026
Last month saw a significant milestone in the implementation of updated regulations for the conduct of clinical trials in the UK which also implemented the updated international good clinical practice guidelines. The updated framework introduces faster and more streamlined trial approvals, a more risk-proportionate regulatory framework, stronger participant protections and transparency obligations, simplified safety reporting arrangements and new terminology.

In my capacity as Head of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance it has been a very challenging time to ensure our trials stay compliant and relevant, but it has also been very rewarding to lead the implementation of the new framework and update our processes to make them fit for purpose for the future of clinical trials. - Joanna, OCTRU HoRAQ

Marloes speaks about how her experience of Trial Management in her PhD sparked her interest in clinical trials, and how she has progressed in her role to now be a Senior Trial Manager at Oxford Trauma and Emergency Care. #ICTD2026
My interest in clinical trials began during my PhD, where I managed a clinical trial involving people with Parkinsons. That experience resulted in me wanting to build my career in clinical trials.
After completing my PhD, I started working as a Trial Administrator in Primary Care before progressing to Trial Manager roles across a range of Primary Care studies. I later moved into Trauma and Emergency Care, where I have been working as a Senior Trial Manager for the past few years. -Marloes, Senior Trial Manager at the Kadoorie Institute of Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care

I first got into trials many moons ago (1989). On return from a busy clinical job in the Canadian outback (Owen Sound, Ontario) I took up a very unique, rare (and seemingly unpopular) job as "research" physio at the NOC whilst doing a parallel MSc at Kings College, London. The enforced project was on Anterior Cruciate Injury and proprioception. I had barely heard of that ligament, never mind this "research" thing! Quickly moving onto a DPhil under the supervision of Prof Hamish Simpson and late Prof John O'Connor, and with the support of the Prof Duthie, longstanding NOC knee surgeon Chris Dodd and I had some great fun putting together a few "crude" trials to explore the value of proprioceptive rehab for ACLD. I cut my teeth and learnt from everyone - engineers, trialists, surgeons, physios, researchers. I became hooked on evaluation science and have stayed that way ever since. Today my trials outlook is truly "international" both with SITU/OCTRU in Oxford and the NHMRC CTC in Sydney. It's a great day to celebrate - so much good has been achieved through rigorous clinical trials - and we can all be proud to be part of that. - Prof. David Beard, Director of SITU NDORMS

There isn't one set path into the world of trials and the range of careers within CTUs are diverse - Patrick, OCTRU’s Head of Programming, talks about how he got into his long career within clinical trials programming, and how collaboration is a key part of his job. #ICTD2026
After having worked as a programmer in manufacturing, finance, mobile telecommunications and logistics, I joined a clinical trials unit at the University of Oxford in June 2005. In that time there have been huge technological advances in IT and an increased emphasis on validation. Systems cannot simply work; they must be demonstrably correct and auditable. Documentation, testing, and version control are therefore as important as technical skill.
A typical day might involve maintaining databases for trial data, ensuring electronic data capture systems run smoothly, and supporting researchers who rely on accurate, timely information.
Collaboration is constant. IT staff work closely with clinicians, statisticians, and trial managers, translating technical issues into plain terms and understanding the practical needs of research teams. Patience and clear communication go a long way. - Patrick, Head of Programming

Connecting with diverse groups of people is an aspect of clinical trials that Anjali, Clinical Trials Manager & Epidemiologist at SITU-NDORMS thrives on! Anjali is currently the trial manager of the GEKO study: geko.octru.ox.ac.uk #ICTD2026 @geko-study.bsky.social @situ-oxford.bsky.social
My initiation to clinical trials was by re-evaluating two long-running series of UK childhood leukaemia trials as part of my doctoral research and seeing how they contributed to 5-year survival rates increasing from less than 5% in the early 1960s to currently over 85% - and I got to demonstrate children are being cured! I am now managing the GEKO clinical trial and the aspect I enjoy most is the enormous number of people whom I get to connect with including possible participants, patient representatives, health professionals, and academics from many disciplines who are all single-mindedly committed to improving health outcomes. - Anjali, Clinical Trials Manager & Epidemiologist

Roles at CTUs are varied, and for some of us, we didn’t know such opportunities were available! Keira, OCTRU’s GCP Compliance Manager discusses how she progressed from trial assistant to her current role in QA and how you don’t need to be a scientist or medic to be involved in research. #ICTD2026
I didn’t realise roles like mine existed – past me would have loved to have known I could be involved in research without needing to be a scientist or medic! My first role in clinical trials was over 10 years ago as a trial assistant in a CTU; helping with administrative tasks. I then moved into the Quality and Regulatory team, as assistant, then Officer and then a Manager within pharmacovigilance (drug safety). I am now GCP Compliance Manager for Clinical Research at OCTRU where I continue to learn and be excited by the research my job role supports. - Keira, GCP Compliance Manager for Clinical Research

Mimi, Clinical Trial Manager at EMR discusses how she discovered career opportunities within trials when she moved to the UK, how she progressed in her career within trials, and why her job continues to motivate her. #ICTD2026
I discovered clinical trials as a career while moving from Europe to the UK and was immediately drawn to the impact each trial phase has on developing new treatments and improving existing care. I progressed into a Clinical Trial Manager role, building hands-on experience in coordinating complex studies. I have developed strong skills in managing complex and multi-centre trial designs, meeting targets and milestones, and applying critical thinking to solve challenges. I’m driven by the opportunity to deliver high-quality research that directly improves patient outcomes and makes a meaningful difference. - Mimi, Clinical Trial Manager

I joined the OCTRU IT team in 2015 after a few months of configuring systems for another university department. I knew relatively little about clinical trials at the time but was keen to be doing something closer to my sciences degree. Now it’s hard to imagine working in any other field! My passion for medicine comes from lived experience. My mum lives with autoimmune diseases that have significantly affected her quality of life, and she is a huge part of why I do this work. Statistics and medicine go hand in hand in developing and evaluating new treatments, helping to turn data into evidence that can improve care. Knowing that my work can contribute, even in a small way, to changing lives for the better is what brings me the most joy. - Manu, DPhil student & Medical Statistician
