David, Director of SITU-NDORMS joyfully looks back on how his career path was shaped by many influential people, and why International Clinical Trials Day is such an important day to celebrate! Find out more about SITU NDORMS: www.ndorms.ox.ac.uk/octru/octru-... @situ-oxford.bsky.social #ICTD2026
I first got into trials many moons ago (1989). On return from a busy clinical job in the Canadian outback (Owen Sound, Ontario) I took up a very unique, rare (and seemingly unpopular) job as "research" physio at the NOC whilst doing a parallel MSc at Kings College, London. The enforced project was on Anterior Cruciate Injury and proprioception. I had barely heard of that ligament, never mind this "research" thing! Quickly moving onto a DPhil under the supervision of Prof Hamish Simpson and late Prof John O'Connor, and with the support of the Prof Duthie, longstanding NOC knee surgeon Chris Dodd and I had some great fun putting together a few "crude" trials to explore the value of proprioceptive rehab for ACLD. I cut my teeth and learnt from everyone - engineers, trialists, surgeons, physios, researchers. I became hooked on evaluation science and have stayed that way ever since. Today my trials outlook is truly "international" both with SITU/OCTRU in Oxford and the NHMRC CTC in Sydney. It's a great day to celebrate - so much good has been achieved through rigorous clinical trials - and we can all be proud to be part of that. - Prof. David Beard, Director of SITU NDORMS

Connecting with diverse groups of people is an aspect of clinical trials that Anjali, Clinical Trials Manager & Epidemiologist at SITU-NDORMS thrives on! Anjali is currently the trial manager of the GEKO study: geko.octru.ox.ac.uk #ICTD2026 @geko-study.bsky.social @situ-oxford.bsky.social
My initiation to clinical trials was by re-evaluating two long-running series of UK childhood leukaemia trials as part of my doctoral research and seeing how they contributed to 5-year survival rates increasing from less than 5% in the early 1960s to currently over 85% - and I got to demonstrate children are being cured! I am now managing the GEKO clinical trial and the aspect I enjoy most is the enormous number of people whom I get to connect with including possible participants, patient representatives, health professionals, and academics from many disciplines who are all single-mindedly committed to improving health outcomes. - Anjali, Clinical Trials Manager & Epidemiologist

Alice, a Clinical Trial Manager in SITU-NDS talks about how and why she was drawn to Trial Management, and why it is fulfilling to work in trials. Find out more about the SITU NDS group here: www.ndorms.ox.ac.uk/octru/octru-... #ICTD2026
After obtaining my PhD in Biological Sciences, I began my career as a postdoctoral researcher. During this time, I realised I wanted to move into clinical research, where I could contribute to studies with a more immediate and meaningful impact on patient care. I was particularly drawn to trial management, as it allows me to support Chief Investigators in delivering their research while working closely within multidisciplinary teams. After exploring different roles and speaking with colleagues involved in clinical trials, I transitioned into this field and have continued to develop my career. I find clinical research collaborative, engaging, and highly rewarding. - Alice, Clinical Trial Manager

Lesley, Clinical Trials Assistant at the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU - NDORMS) talks about her shift into the world of trials after taking a career break, and why she enjoys working in trials. #ICTD2026 @situ-oxford.bsky.social
After studying biochemistry at university, I was a scientific journal editor for over 10 years. After a career break to focus on my family, I took the leap back into work at the surgical trials unit (SITU) in NDORMS and I am very happy! The work is varied and keeps me learning every day. Most importantly, it feels meaningful knowing it ultimately helps improve treatment for patients. - Lesley, Clinical Trials Assistant
