Infusoria BioArt exhibition exploring microbiology opens at the John Radcliffe Hospital
BioArt exhibition exploring microbiology opens at the John Radcliffe Hospital A new display of work by artist Anna Dumitriu is now on show at the John Radcliffe Hospital, bringing together art, microbiology and research into healthcare-associated infections. The exhibition draws on research from Modernising Medical Microbiology into hospital environments, bacteria and antimicrobial resistance. Through BioArt, Anna’s work explores the microbial world that usually remains unseen and encourages people to think differently about the relationship between microorganisms, healthcare and our surroundings.

❤️ #WorldHeartDay We're celebrating research that has the potential to transform the lives of people living with the inherited heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Read about this major international study we funded: bit.ly/3TXRLcP @ox.ac.uk @ouhospitals.bsky.social @nihr.bsky.social
Graphic showing quote from Professor Stefan Neubauer, Imaging Theme Leader at the National Institute of Health and Care Research Biomedical Research Centre: Oxford. The BRC funded a major international study led by researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Virginia showed that combining cardiac MRI scans, blood biomarker data and clinical history can significantly improve the prediction of serious outcomes in people with HCM, the most frequent causes of sudden cardiac death in younger people. This study is being celebrated for World Heart Day 2026. Professor Neubauers says: 'This is the largest prospective study of this disease that has incorporated standardised, quality-controlled assessments with cardiac MRI and blood biomarkers. Our results show that these additional measurements provide powerful risk predictors of adverse outcomes in HCM'.

September is World Pulmonary Fibrosis Month, and we’re highlighting recent research by our Respiratory Theme that could lead to improved diagnosis and treatments for patients with this disease.

Photograph and quote from Professor Ling-Pei Ho, the NIHR BRC: Oxford’s Theme Lead for Respiratory Medicine, who led the study. She said the findings offer hope: “Current treatments target fibrosis once scarring is already established. Our findings raise the possibility of therapeutically targeting immune pathways that are active at earlier stages of fibrosis and in patients with earlier disease before irreversible remodelling of the lungs.”
