Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings... One of Grimalditeuthis bonplandi's tentacle clubs is like a little squid hand puppet. They will flap it around, and would-be predators will think they are getting a tasty squid snack, when they really are going to be a snack for a squid. #SQUIDtember
A Grimalditeuthis bonplandi swimming in ocean without its tentacle extended. The squid is translucent with orange tinge, and is covered in yellow chromatophores. It has two sets of fins which are both flapping. The upper fins have more chromatophores. You can see some of its organs due to its translucent flesh.A Grimalditeuthis bonplandi floating in the ocean with its "squid puppet" tentacle extended. This black dragonfish (Idiacanthus sp.) was spotted at 527 meters (1,729 feet) in Monterey Bay. Black dragonfish are built for life in the darkness of the deep ocean. Their ultra-black skin helps them stay camouflaged from prey like fishes and crustaceans. 🐉🖤

There's so much here but I'm stuck on the use of h-index as a metric of "merit" The metric based on citation? The thing we have tons of data on about how non-cis-white guys get less of regardless of the quality work? Ideological bias aside, what an embarrassing time to forget about covariance.

University professors generally do not make very much relative to our training levels. Most of us, especially in STEM, could make a lot more in industry (and deal with a lot less bureaucracy). Grant money mostly goes to paying students, postdocs, and staff, and is heavily vetted and scrutinized.

Sex-biased parasitism has rarely been explored in simultaneous hermaphrodites and, intriguingly, we found that the hermaphrodites had significantly higher Simpson's Diversity for parasite species, and we also found population-level differences in sex-biased parasitism.

This was actually my third dissertation chapter and is personally my favorite: this is the paper that got me out of the "scientific bed in the morning." We explored sex-biased parasitism in a system with only simultaneous hermaphrodites and males across a spatial gradient.
