In "Synthesizing Sex/es Across Scales and Lineages" we name how "specialized" concepts can be broadly useful in countering our mammalian biases and introduce a graphical system for mapping anisogamete-production strategy across levels of modularity. doi.org/10.1093/icb/... @sicbjournals.bsky.social
Fig. 1 The top row of the figure is the key. A box on the left describes the five levels of organization shown in the figure. The first three levels can be independent or semi-independent and are, from the top: genetic individual (G),
connected colony (C), and individual body (B). The last two levels
are not independent: body subunit (L2) and body subunit (L1). The rest
of the key describes the drawing system used. A single line connecting
circles at different levels of organization shows that the higher level
includes the lower level, a double line shows that the higher level
equals the lower level. Different types of conspecific organization
are encompassed within rounded rectangles. Numbers within circles at
the same level of organization (e.g., 1, 2) indicate sequence. Gamete
production type is indicated by circles with the following characteristics:
female only is white; male only is black; sequential has two black
quarters and two white quarters; simultaneous is grey; and unknown
is a dotted circle with a question mark. Organisms depicted in the
middle row, below the key, have up to three levels of organization
and do not have body subunits. Organisms in the bottom row have up
to five levels of organization and have at least one type of body subunit.
Information about each organism depicted is provided in the caption.

Why is there "no consensus" about sex in biology? Turns out, we're using seven different concepts. In "Evolution, development and the incoherence of sex" we name & elucidate these concepts. With Karen Warkentin and Jay Falk @jjinsing.bsky.social @sicbjournals.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/icb/...

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.

Sex and the repeated origins of sexes are key sources of biological diversity, contributing to enormous variation in how organisms reproduce. Yet our conception of sex/es is disproportionately shaped by animal models. We need broader comparative approaches and collaborations across organismal silos to develop more general, inclusive frameworks. This symposium convenes researchers working on protists, plants, fungi, animals, and theoretical models to engage with the complexities of sex and reproduction, aiming to distinguish shared principles from taxonomic idiosyncrasies, highlight fundamental differences and open questions, and generate new frameworks for understanding sex in biology. By fostering integrative dialogue across disciplines and taxa, we hope to advance a more inclusive and accurate understanding of reproductive diversity across the tree of life.

S04: Sex across origins: Questioning animal-centric assumptions and developing integrative frameworks
Short title: Sex across origins

Organizers:
A. M. Aramati Casper, Colorado State University
Jay J. Falk, University of Colorado - Boulder
Karen M. Warkentin, Boston University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Sex and reproduction have evolved in diverse ways across eukaryotes, yet biological concepts of sex remain heavily shaped by human and canonical animal models. This symposium seeks to challenge narrow definitions by embracing the full complexity of sexual phenotypes, reproductive strategies, and developmental origins across taxa. By convening an interdisciplinary group of researchers working on plants, fungi, animals, and protists, we aim to identify shared principles, highlight irreconcilable differences, and stimulate new frameworks for understanding sex in biology. The symposium will foster integrative dialogue across career stages, disciplines, and organismal systems to advance a more inclusive and accurate understanding of reproductive diversity.

From @aaas.org check-in with Sudip Parikh: a letter by 14 Republican senators urge the Office of Management and Budget to release NIH funding. If this includes your state (AL, ME, WV, SC, KY, KS, AR, PA, NC, IN, AK), Sudip recommends contacting & thanking them for being American science leaders.
Director Vought:
We write to ask you to fully implement the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, including funds appropriated for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The continuing resolution supp011s NIH initiatives across a range of critical research areascancer, cardiovascular disease, rare pediatric disorders, and more. These vital efforts are not only necessary to Make America Healthy Again, but also have a direct impact on American families, biomedical innovation, our economy, and competing with Communist China.
We are concerned by the slow disbursement rate of FY25 NIH funds, as it risks undermining critical research and the thousands of American jobs it supports. Suspension of these appropriated funds - whether formally withheld or functionally delayed - could threaten Americans' ability to access better treatments and limit our nation's leadership in biomedical science. It also risks inadve11ently severing ongoing NIH-funded research prior to actionable results.
We share your commitment to ensuring NIH funds are used responsibly and not diverted to ideological or unaccountable programs. We are confident Secretary Kennedy and Director Bhattacharya are well positioned to uphold gold standard research by ensuring that NIH awards are grounded in transparency, scientific merit, and a clear alignment with national interests. Our shared goal is to restore public trust in the NIH precisely because its work is focused on results, accountability, and real-world impact. Withholding or suspending these funds would jeopardize that trust and hinder progress on critical health challenges facing our nation. Ultimately, this is about finding cures and seeing them through to fruition.
We respectfully request that you ensure the timely release of all FY25 NIH appropriations in accordance with congressional intent. Doing so will ensure continued momentum in curing disease, supp011ing American innovation, and delivering result…Sincerely,
