This is Bob. They are a hermaphroditic comb jelly that recently underwent reverse development from adult lobate to larval cydippid, following a period of stress. The event reduced our colony to just Bob. Once our food source stabilized, Bob began to flourish & what was 1 Bob is now 500+ Bobettes! 🦑

Chromosomal inversions are both engines of repeatability and innovation. They drive parallel genetic divergence between snail ecotypes across Europe, while also harbouring local variants that contribute to site-specific trait variations and adaptation: doi.org/10.1093/jeb/... Pajot et al 2026

I lied about number of posts in this thread, because I also wanted to share that Paige is an extremely talented visual communicator. The potential for adaptive diversity being linked to the Salish estuary is important, but also the generality of demographic isolation in this region from the Pacific.
Comparison of 10 other pelagic/planktonic dispersal species that exhibit strong isolation across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The point being, PLD is not a primary cause of this pattern.

We find - and review papers w/ similar spatial patterns - that diversity in the Salish Sea is distinct from that in the outer coast Pacific. This is notable because the Salish has high endemic diversity, though sadly we did not have enough metadata to tackle the color polymorphism problem.
