I feel like a remora as a recent PhD right now. Circling the known funding sources for PIs with anything tangential to latch onto. It's not parasitic, I can support myself off the scraps and cast off data. Just give me a habitat in this oligotrophic biological funding environment.

I wondered if pelagic tunicates sleep, because they're like urochordates and all... and now I find myself reading Endocrinology manuscripts. Apparently, melatonin has been found in a bunch of invertebrate phyla too. Kind of cool stuff I barely understand on the evolution of bioregulation pathways.

My parents managed to raise two PhDs with very different personalities. I realized that this photo is significant to my Duffy family history, so I feel the obligation to post it somewhere. My brother teaches statistical methods in environmental sociology. Apples, trees, and all that.

Saw a moth on my backdoor and managed a good photo of an invert (for once). It seems to be a slug-moth, possibly the abbreviated button slug moth. Not formed from slugs, their larvae aren't traditional caterpillars and resemble 'slugs' (or chitons, to me).

First publication! For this manuscript, I manually reviewed ~550k plankton pics across 11 months to ID life stages of salps and doliolids. Tl;dr 'only using bloom-observations to predict distributions of pelagic tunicates is likely missing their full ranges'. And also doliolids =/= salps

Oh, crap, now I have to actually do something with the PhD. For the summer, I've got another crazy manually ID'd image-data I can get submitted (that was only in my dissertation as traits in a few months). I maybe manually identified larvaceans from ~550k ROI while also doing salps & doliolids.

I recommend this documentary/podcast series on "The Codfather" of the IRS-takedown of a fishing fleet owner in the cod-industry in the USA. By a public radio station in the Boston area. It comes off quick as a crime thing, but rapidly evolves into details about history of NE USA fisheries.

The USMNT World-Cup roster (leaks) are great because my hopes are let down early. I'm not convinced that a midfield shorter than 5'9" on average is a good idea; it's not like our technical players are best in world. Not playing to strengths, trying to play to Euro-ball....USA is out in Groups.

In an extremely small subset of ROI, imaging methods can capture gelatinous zooplankton fecal pellet production in situ. Nowhere near enough observations for rigorous analysis, but potentially enough for fun "informed" envelope estimates.

Sometimes you get one single ROI that drives you crazy, like this doliolid phorozooid (b/c buds + organs) that looks like it has salp (Thalia democratica-esque) "horns".

"Oh, I just read the LLM response" is not the get-out-of-jail card for confidently stating false information that some people think it is. (1) You tried to hide that you "knew" something (2) You refuse to take responsibility for falsely stating something (3) Everything you say is now in question.

The emperor and king penguins were how myself, a 7-year old in a landlocked state, developed a special interest in our planet's oceans. That led to my passion for the complexities of biological oceanography. I have no other input besides the obligation to share that Emperor penguins jumped 2 stages.

I'm impressed that a phyllosoma (spiny/slipper lobster larva, can't tell 100% which by the angle here) can capture a siphonophore. Those things chug along at a high velocity for their size! Gelatinous zooplankton are far from a trophic dead-end.

Some doliolid phorozooids (the asexual life stage of an asexual life stage) are absolute beasts. Each budding gonozooid (the final sexual stage) is also actively feeding during growth as a bud. This is counted as "1 phorozooid ROI" in calculations... but in reality is more complicated.

I *think* these are all the same Appendicularian/Larvacean species (images from same sampling tow). Pro's and Con's of shadow imaging, I have 3 images from many-thousands that are my best shot at ID'ing a small organism.

Patrick Duffy @pduffyplankton.bsky.social · 26/02/2026
Salp chains constantly are the bane of my existence. At least doliolid chains are smaller so it's easy to say "just the colony". Sizes matter (& number of zooids). For functional traits in a community, a big colony is not equal to a small colony, but 1 ROI = 1 ROI. Biovolumes may provide the keys.
