A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

I met a traveler from an inland state
Who said: Two vast and humming racks of steel
Stand in the cornfield. Near them, on the plain,
Half buried in weed, a broken server face lies,
Its stilled fans, its dulled and blinking lights,
Tell that its builders knew the hype well
Which once ran through these halls, now cold and still,
The hands that fed them and the minds that made:
And on the switchroom wall these words remain:
“My name is Jensen Huang, CEO of CEOs:
Look on my cloud compute, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that great digital ruin, boundless and bare
The autumn fields stretch flat and far away.

Today's affirmation message: Your hack doesn't have to look beautiful. It just has to work. That's what gives your hack true beauty.
A macro photo of an LED Strip stuck on to a piece of aluminium extrusion.

This LED strip is in horizontal orientation, and approximately 10mm high. It's been manufactured with a series of 5050 SMD LEDs (0.5 X 0.5 mm surface mount device light emitting diodes).
In the middle of this photo is a section of the LED Strip with a series of tiny copper pads, like on a printed circuit board. They're labelled "+12V", "G", "R", "B" to significantly what each pad is for: connection points for a "common anode" arrangement with positive 12 Volts power, and individual connection points for the ground for each of the RGB power rails for the LEDs.
In this installation, a large blob of solder has been applied to bridge together all of the RGB pads. In other words, applying power to any part of the circuit will deliver power to all of the LEDs equally. There's no need for complicated circuitry to mix colours if all you want in a hurry is white light.

Yeah, felt a few oscillations lateral shiftiness in that earthquake. Geoscience Australia reports the earthquake was magnitude 4.8, at a depth of 10km, and centred near Leongatha. #Earthquake #Australia #Victoria #Melbourne #Geoscience #GeoscienceAustralia
Screenshot of earthquake report at https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/

It's cropped to show just a map of southern and central Victoria and some of the sea off to the south. Melbourne is roughly in the middle of the map. There's also a large red dot to indicate the location of the earthquake. It appears the earthquake was centred near the town of Leongatha in Gippsland, 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

I was kind of thinking of doing a TikTok or something to reflect this. I am so tired of saying the same awful thing about cybersecurity on here hundreds of time, I'm not trying to be a gatekeeper or ahole.

I mentor young people for free. I want them to love IT and cybersecurity.

There. Are. No. Jobs. I'm soeffingtired. Cyber is full. There are no jobs.

The market has crashed. You will not get a job from a bootcamp. You will not get a career from WGU unless you did insane self study before hand. You will not get a job with a Security+ or CEH. HackTheBox and TryHackMe mean less than nothing to HR.

You had better have a Bachelors in CS from a credible school or similar. You had better have your Sec+ and CySA or OSCP. You had better be networking, doing projects, and getting top scores in CTFs. You had better have at least 2 years working in full time IT on your resume. You're competing with people with 4+ who have been laid off.

I am ready to throw fists at schools and influencers selling it otherwise. You have to fight to survive in this field these days and almost all of us have taken massive pay hits. It's not due to some magic AI. It's a rush on the field with glowing sales pitches, and a terrible global market.

Don't get into cybersecurity, or IT in general frankly, unless you have a box of torn apart computer parts on your shelf and a folder of projects on disk before even considering it. You will have to hustle. You'll get treated like crap and paid like crap. Your life will be old grey hairs like me telling you about how we got a job at a bar and you'll be finishing your 3rd 10.000 dollar cert. I can't fix that. Do it only if you love this stuff enough to deal with the unbearable market and all the shit you'll deal with for months looking for a low paid job. I see mentees in tears every single week and I am at the end of my rope.

McSweeney's on "AI finances" goes harder than most business publications. www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/ai-econ…
mcsweeneys.net
AI Economics for Dummies
As AI companies get ready to go public and we get a deeper look at their inner workings, it’s only natural to have questions about their finances, like “Do they make money?” and “How?” Here are a few examples to help the average layperson understand the business side of AI. **1.** Acquiring one grape costs Alex $2 billion. Alex offers to sell Mike one grape a month for the next 12 months for $1 billion per grape. Alex asks for the full $12 billion up front and provides Mike with one grape for the first month. Alex makes a $10 billion profit this month; his ARR is $120 billion, and his profits are trending up at an infinite rate. _The Wall Street Journal_ ’s business editor moves into Alex’s house, having accepted a part-time position as Alex’s human footstool. He never asks to see the books. **2.** Laura drives a taxi. Instead of charging her customers a fee for every ride, she charges them a $20/month subscription. Laura has 40 million paying customers, totaling roughly $13 billion in annual revenue. Laura spends $25 billion/year on gas. In a fit of late-capitalist bloodlust, hordes of tech and finance bros riot in the streets, firebombing every rideshare, bus, and pedicab they can find, declaring the transportation business officially “over.” Also, Laura’s taxi cost her $1 trillion to attain, and she’ll have to replace it in four to eight years. **3.** Jenny owns a crematorium. John’s propane company gives her a $20 billion investment in return for 5 percent of her operation. Jenny throws $10 billion into the incinerator, then pays John $10 billion to buy propane to burn that money to ashes. John reports that his AI investments have generated $10 billion in revenue this quarter and that he owns 5 percent of a $100 billion business. A reporter from _Forbes_ is assigned to profile John and Jenny, and over the course of his research, he becomes embroiled in a passionate but confusing three-way love affair with them, which eventually turns into a polyamorous common-law marriage. His profile is glowing, but light on financial details. **4.** Benjamin owns a farm. He employs 100 workers plowing his fields. His total payroll is $10 million/year. One day, he buys a mule, which provides the worker who uses it with a modest 10 percent productivity gain. Benjamin fires 99 of his workers and purchases 99 mules, expecting a 1,000 percent productivity gain. The driverless mules cause plow damage to his property in excess of $50 million. Benjamin loses another $5 million due to the loss of productivity from his one remaining employee, who no longer guides a plow but instead spends 100 percent of his time shoveling mule shit. Goldman Sachs builds an altar to Benjamin in their lobby and cuts out the heart of a junior analyst on it every Friday. They call it “Blood Sacrifice Friday.” The name isn’t catchy, but the event becomes a management favorite nonetheless. **5.** Xavier owns an apartment that he rents out at a loss of $1 billion/month. Seeing this success, he decides to make financial commitments to construct $850 billion in new apartments in places nobody wants them. He convinces Ted to leverage everything he owns to help him build the apartments, telling him that once they are built, every human being on Earth will live in them. Ted contributes $100 billion, part of which immediately goes toward paying off Xavier’s $1 billion/month loss. _Forbes_ gives Xavier and Ted a cover feature, likening their building project to God creating the Heavens and the Earth. Many Fortune 500 CEOs take this comparison literally and establish a new religion around Ted and Xavier, with themselves as high priests. Soon, they start a Holy War with the pope, declaring “Ted and Xavier the One True Gods on Earth” and promising to “purge the nonbelievers” in an official press release. They annex, then subsequently demolish, Vatican City, committing another $900 billion dollars to build new apartments in its place. _Forbes_ hails this as “disruptive,” though it’s not clear how Ted and Xavier plan to finance the project. We hope these examples help clarify the inner workings of AI economics. But if you’re still confused, all you really need to know is that everything is totally working and everyone is making a lot of money, and you should just stop asking questions, luddite.

joined a Luddite attack on a textile mill in
April 1812. He was injured, detained and
died after being allegedly tortured to give

The right side of the image has further times obscured by a gigantic emoji. It's a cold blue, has shivering teeth, and icicles hanging from its lips and jawline.
