I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

anyway this is why ai companies are trying so hard to make their products infrastructural, and tie them into other infrastructural information technologies

if you think you are fully in charge of your own choices when it comes to infrastructure, you are missing the point of what infrastructure does this is not an argument against personal responsibility nor me trying to say people don’t have agency

all infrastructure erodes consent, sometimes it bypasses it completely this is uncomfortable (& often problematic), but it should not be controversial to point out this fact

There’s no A.I. “literacy”. There is only power, to either rebuild or eradicate commonly shared knowledge production. They haz it. Remains to be seen if we haz some too.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

bracketed focus is great. sometimes none of the photos are good, though. but the ones that don't work often show a lot of character in the subject's movement. here's a handful of frames of a restless salticid scoping things out, from a camping trip this year

funny to think that 'superintelligence' (or the semblance of it) may indeed be coming, to the extent that AI adoption is functionally zero sum and debases human cognition/critical thinking/creativity/spontaneity

The wild Blue-faced Honeyeaters at Taronga Western Plains Zoo are pretty tolerant of humans as long as you're calm and quiet. #birds
Photo of a Blue Face Honeyeater on a grevillea branch with flower buds. The bird is black and white with a large zone of bare, blue skin around its eyes, and a stout curved beak in grey and black. It is looking to the side.Another Blue-faced Honeyeater (or maybe the same?) in the same grevillea plant with an open flower that is red and yellow. The bird has its head tilted and is looking at the viewer warily.Same subject, close-up crop, it is now drinking from and looking at the flower. The photo is highly detailed, showing the physical structure of the bird's iris.

I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

The solution to climate change cannot accommodate continued fossil fuel use except in a rapidly declining capacity, and any system that provides for a 'future' above this limit is complicit. I hope for restitution for not just Nepal but for all of us. Accountability in fossil fuels means their end.

nyr @nyr027.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Imagining these events continue to accelerate and worsen: we need to have stopped burning fossil fuels yesterday; the true cost will always outstrip the redistribution of wealth. And that's assuming it is carried out equitably, but money behind these companies cannot be trusted to it in good faith.

nyr @nyr027.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Which is why a payout system doesn't make sense, insofar as it extends the status quo rather than outright negating it; presumably the cost is distributed and proportional only as much as tolerable and allows business as usual, rather than being something existential, as it is for all of us already.

Photo of a Glossy Ibis in a large, sunlit aviary, standing on one leg with both wings extended upwards. Its head is hunched down and turned 3/4 towards the viewer. Its feathers are glossy, ranging from black in the shadows to iridescent blues, greens, and purples on the wings and forehead, and rich orange brown on the body and arms.Same subject but it is now bowing towards the viewer clearly showing the top of its head and back, and the rich array of colours on its arm feathers.

There is only ever hope, spilling out of the atom of eternity at the centre of time. Everything is sustained by it, in every moment. Often it is easier to retreat into fantasies of teleology or inevitability or justice, but these exist simply as ideal limits of conceptual understanding

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

A belted kingfisher flies very low over the surface of calm, pale blue water. Its wings, which are dark blue with white spots, are at their lowest point and are just millimeters from the water's surface. Its dark blue head is up and looking forward. A band of white on its neck separates the blue feathers on its head and back.
