I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I find photographing flowers very uplifting. When I was younger, doing creative work helped me cope. These days it feels much lighter. (I guess it worked?) Passiflora 'Susan Brigham' under UV light.

bracketed focus is great. sometimes none of the photos are good, though. but the ones that don't work often show a lot of character in the subject's movement. here's a handful of frames of a restless salticid scoping things out, from a camping trip this year

funny to think that 'superintelligence' (or the semblance of it) may indeed be coming, to the extent that AI adoption is functionally zero sum and debases human cognition/critical thinking/creativity/spontaneity

The wild Blue-faced Honeyeaters at Taronga Western Plains Zoo are pretty tolerant of humans as long as you're calm and quiet. #birds
Photo of a Blue Face Honeyeater on a grevillea branch with flower buds. The bird is black and white with a large zone of bare, blue skin around its eyes, and a stout curved beak in grey and black. It is looking to the side.Another Blue-faced Honeyeater (or maybe the same?) in the same grevillea plant with an open flower that is red and yellow. The bird has its head tilted and is looking at the viewer warily.Same subject, close-up crop, it is now drinking from and looking at the flower. The photo is highly detailed, showing the physical structure of the bird's iris.

I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

Me: Hello, I'm here to take reference photos so if anyone feels like putting on a show, I'd be most grateful. Glossy Ibis: How about this? Me: ::dies:: #birds
Photo of a Glossy Ibis in a large, sunlit aviary, standing on one leg with both wings extended upwards. Its head is hunched down and turned 3/4 towards the viewer. Its feathers are glossy, ranging from black in the shadows to iridescent blues, greens, and purples on the wings and forehead, and rich orange brown on the body and arms.Same subject but it is now bowing towards the viewer clearly showing the top of its head and back, and the rich array of colours on its arm feathers.

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

It's crazy to me how close the wings of these belted kingfishers get to the water when the fly low like this #birds #bird #photography #ornithology #birdphotos #nature #naturephotography #birdphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #birdoftheday #bbirdname #beltedkingfisher #kingfisher 🦉 🪶
A belted kingfisher flies very low over the surface of calm, pale blue water. Its wings, which are dark blue with white spots, are at their lowest point and are just millimeters from the water's surface. Its dark blue head is up and looking forward. A band of white on its neck separates the blue feathers on its head and back.

“The effect of ChatGPT on educators’ lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you’ve made every teacher’s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in… If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They’ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that’s silencing an entire generation or two.”

Do bees have inner lives? Slow-motion video reveals bumblebee behaviour similar to ‘liking’ or ‘disliking’
Bees respond to tasty treats or plain water based on context, study that may provide support for establishing insect sentience shows * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast When bumblebees taste something good, they reach out their glossa – or insect tongue – for a while afterwards, almost as if they are licking their lips. And when they don’t like something, the insects will shake their heads and wipe their mouths. Scientists who captured the miniature facial expressions on slow-motion video say the behaviour is consistent with “liking” and “disliking” responses observed in mammals. Their results have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Continue reading...
