Not sure what the shocked reaction is about. There have been articles written about Hezb's ability to exploit Lebanon's status as a failed state to shore up support within the Shia and even Christian communities by providing basic government services since 2008, it's not exactly a novel take.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has called the vandalism of several statues in Parliament Square, including one of women's votes campaigner Dame Millicent Fawcett, "disgraceful".

Ch Supt Stuart Bell, who was leading the policing operation for the protest, said: "It is very disappointing to see damage to seven statues and property in the vicinity of the protest today.
"We support the public's right to protest but criminality like this is completely unacceptable."
A spokesperson for Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson, speaking on the damage to Dame Millicent's statue, said she "utterly condemns the appalling defacement of such an important national monument to the fight for women's rights"
"There is no excuse for this disgraceful criminal damage."
The Met confirmed it is also dealing with a number of complaints from the public about signs and images shared on social media that were reportedly displayed at the protest yesterday and "action will be taken if there are signs displayed that breach of the law"

Awful. Just awful. A promising young man, a high school honors grad who joined JROTC and dreamed of becoming a doctor, killed himself because of the Trump admin’s obsession with hurting Haitians and the humiliating shame of an ICE ankle monitor. His blood is on their hands.

The administration has been orchestrating a full-blown assault on international students in the past couple of months, which has received little media attention. Proposed $100k fee for OPT, new $103k fee on all H1Bs (not just consular apps), and now new restrictive federal guidance on CPT. Insane.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued advisories regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for F-1 students (message on August 12 and another message on August 24). Unfortunately, this updated guidance significantly limits current and future CPT eligibility to only those engagements that are integral to the academic curriculum, required of all students in the program, and documented with a cooperative agreement.

Our International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), in consultation with colleagues across the University, has reviewed all potentially affected CPT authorizations and requests. All international students immediately impacted will be individually contacted by the ISSO today. The ISSO website, especially the CPT page has been updated to reflect the new guidance.

The funny thing is, I can't remember any parallel controversy, or even any debate, about using the term "genocide" to refer to the campaigns against the Rohingya in 2016-2017. The government of Myanmar denied it - but there was no hand-wringing or insistence that we wait for a formal ICJ finding.

A report on the ground from the ICE shooting in Biddeford that should make every parent in this country lose their minds:

Cecelia Humiston, 22, lives on Chapel Street. She was asleep with her two-year-old son when she woke up to the sounds of a commotion on surrounding streets.

When she went to investigate, she saw what appeared to be a person lying on the ground on Pool Street.

She remembers hearing an older woman with a distressed family, yelling, “You took her dad, you took her dad!”

“They were with a little girl, she couldn't have been older than three,” Humiston said. “She was still in her Bluey pajamas.”

Humiston described law enforcement as “rude,” and said they barricaded family’s car from leaving. Another yelled at the little girl, who was trying to smell flowers.
