absolutely nails why i am a Londoner first, and everything else second. The city is a place we all get to be part of, whatever else we were - or were told we were - elsewhere.

Misogyny killed Monica many years before she died
When poor Monica Coghlan died in a car crash last week, it was a result both pitiful and inevitable. The rightful order had been restored. Justice had been done. Her sad, brief life was over: she had ...

It's fantastic, honestly. Have had a record "3 Songs from Dougal and the Blue Cat" since it came out (apparently the other half of one of mum's colleagues worked on the sound, and I got a freebie), always loved it. Never saw the movie until university - was not disappointed :)

It's Labour who've shifted though - and it's so frustrating. They clearly have a bunch of really good people as candidates and MPs, but something about the organisation is holding them back.

When @graemeedgeler.bsky.social says you're "the worst Speaker I can recall" you know it's bad. Gerry Brownlee, Parliament's ineffectual policeman, wraps up chaotic term newsroom.co.nz/2026/09/24/g...
Brownlee is the worst Speaker I can recall. A single ruling during the committee stage of the fast-track law is sufficient for him to earn this title. A basic and long-standing rule in the House is that the admissibility of amendments in the Committee of the Whole is a decision for the Chair and that this will not be interfered with by the Speaker. The Chair ruled out National’s list of projects to add to the law. The Government asked for the Speaker to be recalled, and to get the government out of a jam, the Speaker intervened, undermining the Chair and decades of practice, just so the Government didn’t have to wait to use the Parliamentary options open to them. Completely unjustified and the worst Parliamentary action I can recall a Speaker taking.

Foreword to the Revised and Expanded Edition - xi

Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien - 1

The whole "user pays" idea has poisoned NZ politics for years. Was genius on the part of whoever brought it in - a way to sell inequity to the country as if it were a natural and good thing.
