today's essential read for all Canadians. “Human rights and respect for constitutionally protected Aboriginal rights and title, in addition to Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination, must not be spun as inconveniences to Canada’s economic aspirations,”

Carney’s first “national interest” project is an oil pipeline through Indigenous territories. Consent was not part of the announcement.

Wow, there's a giant NDA (non-disclosure agreement) up as a Nuit Blanche art installation calling out the silencing of curators and artists who've spoken critically of Israel. It's in the alley off Spadina south of Richmond leading to Cinecycle. By No Arms in the Arts.
Photo of a 10-foot high non-disclosure agreement in an alley in Toronto with fog and people in the foreground. The contract says "NDA" and "I will not talk about getting fired for criticizing Israel"

Weird that we name bridges, highways, parks, buildings, ships, ports and more after people, but not oil pipelines. Do people not want pipelines named after themselves? I think we should try it out on this one. Call it the Mark Carney Decarbonized Oil Expressway.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

This is why a "sovereign & secure Canada" is a mirage if we don't act aggressively to mitigate climate breakdown. The climate emergency is the gravest emergency threatening our survival. (And you think the US won't come for our water?) We know Carney has influence internationally. He's failing us.
Richard Nugee, a retired general and security expert, told the Guardian governments must treat the climate as they would other threats to national security, such as sabotage by hostile states.

“If a bridge is washed away, it has the same impact whether it’s done by [a foreign power] or the climate,” he said. “The climate crisis will affect food security, energy security, water security, and lead to migration and potentially the recruitment of farmers to [terrorist organisations such as] Isis. Countries should absolutely be treating this as a national security issue.”

Instead we get a lot of patriotic blah blah blah, and this hypocritical mix of “nostalgia isn’t a strategy” and also “we used to build big things” as if that’s an evidence based way to govern.

This government simply hasn’t justified why it needs to gut environmental assessments, weaken labour protections or abandon emissions reductions to build big things given the data shows hundreds of major projects worth hundreds of billions were already underway.

Shorter me: if this is a war, wars have war aims. Ours is a deal Canada can trust. Trump definitionally cannot give us that. A new Congress can. Ergo, our aim should be the maximal defeat of the Republican party. Doing that means the broadest possible economic pain between now and November 3rd.

It’s great that Carney seems to have finally rediscovered what everyone knew almost two years ago — better late than never — but the fact that his pursuit of a trade deal with the US is/was a central pillar of his overall strategy should lead to its fundamental reconsideration.
