This is the funniest thing that's ever happened in the Senate and also the greatest national exposure Maryland's athletic department has received in quite some time

The closest a presidential impeachment has ever come to conviction was passed by the House on a one-sentence resolution three days after the offense (Johnson firing Stanton), and the next-closest was passed by the House a week after the offense (Jan 6).

I mean it’s kind of remarkable that he’s a heretic to both Christianity and the American civil religion in the exact same way: he places himself at the top of them, and the people who most loudly proclaim allegiance to those creeds are the biggest adherents to his heresy.

One of the biggest misconceptions people in the US seem to have is that legal or illegal status are not moral statuses one achieves by doing things the “proper” way, but simply legal fictions bestowed and revoked by the state at will.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.

Big tax results out of Missouri tonight: Voters statewide rejected by an huge margin a GOP ballot measure to phase out the income tax. They also renewed a sales tax to keep state parks free. And Kansas City approved a package of $1.7 billion of bonds for infrastracture.

i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.

Another way of saying this is that states are not only permitted to engage in aggressive partisan gerrymandering, but have an unabridgeable constitutional right to do so, and therefore other forms of discrimination become constitutional as long as they can be expressed as partisan gerrymandering

One reason I hate death penalty cases is that capital punishment is incredibly stupid and irrational. It's cruel, expensive, and serves no deterrent effect. It's rarely imposed, except against a tiny minority of unlucky defendants—and in those cases, racism almost always plays a role. Just end it.

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

Comic panel of Donald Duck and a wide-eyed young Mickey Mouse. Donald's speech bubble: "Democrats should do a huge middle class tax cut to address affordability." Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."
