I see the attraction, but I’d rather Parliament amend a bad Bill than knowingly pass defective law because the first draft has acquired sacred status. The problem isn’t amendment; it’s legislation drafted like a hostage note and then “fixed” with another hostage note.

Ah yes. ‘Mob rule’ is intolerable when the mob objects to your government contracts, but apparently perfectly acceptable when the co-founder is fantasising about public hangings as ‘masculine leadership’. Consistency remains a premium feature.

Quite. A law drafted like a panic attack and enforced like a parish council grievance procedure. Still, at least Wikipedia now knows who’s boss.

Nothing says ‘online safety’ quite like picking a fight with Wikipedia while the actual sewage carries on flowing.

Tom Watson has completed the rare political journey from “Labour deputy leader” to “please don’t let public opinion interfere with my employer’s government contracts.” Quite a career arc.

Former Labour deputy leader Tom Watson now says “mob rule” mustn’t interfere with Palantir’s contracts, and he’d work with a Reform government on immigration crackdowns. Quite the ideological journey. Turns out the red line was simply whoever signs the purchase order.

The Keminaissance appears to consist of spending two years excavating the Conservative Party to see whether there’s anything left worth carbon-dating.

And it wasn’t just small businesses. Self-employed barristers were hit too. A 2020 Bar Council survey reported a 69% fall in fee income for publicly funded barristers. Many junior criminal practitioners faced empty diaries, mounting debts and continuing chambers’ expenses. The bills didn’t stop.

I’d be a rather expensive pâté with whisky, black pepper and a deeply unpleasant aftertaste for anyone who underestimated me. Best served with Bath Olivers and a decent claret. WARNING: May contain traces of contempt for Reform UK. Choking hazard for Farage.

Imagine being so confidently wrong about Englishness that you need a family tree, a DNA test and a remedial biology lesson before you’re allowed near the conversation. The intellectual equivalent of bringing a teaspoon to a gunfight.

Perhaps they should concentrate on reforming their proofreading before attempting to reform the country. One hesitates to entrust the machinery of government to people apparently defeated by the spelling of their own party’s name.

Reform by name. In need of remedial English by nature. The administrative revolution will commence just as soon as someone locates a dictionary. 😏

And one thing I'd genuinely like to know: would Watson agree to an independent assessment of Palantir's claimed NHS benefits, with the underlying methodology available for scrutiny? That would tell us rather more than another exchange of carefully polished letters.

British jobs are not a substitute for public accountability. Nor do claims of technological success answer questions about procurement, data sovereignty or democratic oversight. And asking for those questions to be answered in public. They deserve to be answered.

History has taught us precisely where the systematic portrayal of a minority as a threat to the nation can lead. The language matters. So does the silence of those who ought to know better.

The suggestion that Muslim participation in democracy becomes suspect whenever the result displeases someone is deeply troubling. Allegations of electoral misconduct require evidence. Religious identity is not evidence.b

An internal inquiry declaring everyone innocent while the police investigation continues. How reassuring. One trusts the independence of the process received the same meticulous attention as the desired conclusion. The rule of law does not operate on the principle of marking one’s own homework.😏

Credit where it’s due: Starmer began repairing the damage. Burnham is asking the question others seem terrified to touch. Ten years on, treating Brexit as an irreversible act of national destiny is not political principle. It’s an abdication of intellectual courage.
120
Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
Starmer deserves credit for reopening doors. Burnham is right to question why we remain outside them. But diplomatic niceties are no substitute for political courage. Treating a decade-old referendum as sacred writ is intellectual cowardice. Democracy is not a hereditary curse.

Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
An internal inquiry is not a judicial determination, and a barrister’s involvement is not a certificate of independence. The interesting question isn’t simply what the inquiry concluded. It’s how its independence was established. That, surely, is where proper scrutiny begins.
010
Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
An inquiry into political propriety conducted by someone reportedly possessing longstanding political ties to the party’s leader. One would be fascinated to read the conflict-of-interest assessment. Assuming, of course, there was one.
0141
Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
A barrister with reported longstanding ties to Farage conducts Reform’s internal inquiry and delivers a reassuring verdict. One trusts the potential conflicts were examined with rather more rigour than the allegations. Independence requires more than a wig and a favourable conclusion.

Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
How refreshing. An invitation to rejoin the grown-ups, rather than another decade of pretending that an act of spectacular national self-harm was a triumph of sovereignty.

The French are holding the door open while Britain continues to insist that walking out was an act of extraordinary courage. There’s a fine line between national pride and looking like a complete fucking idiot. Brexit crossed it years ago.

Lady Macbeth @notinstructed.bsky.social · 21h
Well, that’s settled then. Although someone might wish to inform the Metropolitan Police that the defendants have marked their own homework.

Adam, you couldn’t make this up. Exclude the journalists, then give a speech about defending press freedom. Private Eye scarcely needed to write the punchline. Magnificent journalism, though rather less magnificent politics.

A speech on defending press freedom, delivered while journalists from Byline Times were excluded from the conference. You’d think someone might have spotted the irony before Private Eye did. Apparently not.

Once again institutions like the police are failing women facing abuse. We need to come together to stop perpetrators getting away with abuse in all its forms - and demand better from the institutions that are supposed to protect us. Help us hold them all to account ⬇️ goodlaw.social/ouzo

Burnham actually left Westminster to run Greater Manchester. But never mind the facts — someone’s drawn “Corbyn” from the Tory conference tombola.

Archer’s resignation from the London mayoral race after it was revealed he lied in court was the thing that got Paul Foot up from his sickbed and contributing again, having first started chronicling Archer’s lies and misdemeanours in 1969. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 992, December 1999.
