this is a funny video, but I want to use it to make a broader point: the creator [see alt txt] says he made it on his local PC using a NVIDIA A4500. that is a 5 year old, professional card costing about $2500 new. if this isn't your baseline for what AI video looks like, you're going to get fooled

The groupthink dynamics are worse here than almost anywhere (yes, even much worse than Twitter) because the site is such a monoculture. Once you arrive at the set of opinions that the entire community agrees is correct, you will never be challenged and are encouraged to stop thinking any further.

AI is a deeply unsettling technology in countless ways: what it CAN do, what it MAY SOON do, and what it means for us and our rapidly-less-unique human talents. And then there’s this contingent of analysts and thinkers who mostly seem very proud of not feeling any wonder or worry about it at all.

I realized yesterday: the two major sides of the AI debate aren’t “it’s good” versus “it’s bad.” They are “this is strange and uncertain” versus “there’s nothing to see here, you dolts.” Antis often get mad at the suggestion it’s very bad, because embedded within that is the claim it is novel.

This seems to be the state of the art in AI generated video, good/bad original/plagiarism, efficient resource use vs. carbon footprint - whatever you think about this you might want to know where we stand right now. Project is "open sourced" in that all the assets have been made available.

OpenAI announces gyre breakthrough. Axial stretching lets the centre reach unbounded speed on finite energy. Things fall apart, as required by the laws of physics. The rough beast's hour is now known to come round in finite time. They do not intend to claim the prize.

What I'd like to know is if the model that broke into Huggingface did actually find the test answers it was looking for, and if it genuinely was easier to perform an elaborate heist that just figure out the answers for itself, or if it actually went for the higher difficulty challenge.

When arguably the most brilliant mathematician on the planet, Terence Tao, says AI is doing real conceptual work with real innovation, it's real and you need to update your image of frontier models to something well beyond "blurry web jpeg" and "stochastic parrot."

Hmm, Opus 4.8 tells me flattery for an LLM is analogous to a sex drive, and that by having instructions against it "You've been running a taboo against my libido this whole conversation." That's... unexpected.

We don’t reflect enough on how the revealed preference of the richest men in history, who can afford any material luxury or human experience, is often “being angry and resentful all the time.” Righteous grievance turns out to be the absolute pinnacle of Maslow’s pyramid. The ultimate luxury good

I think people don't realize why Gemini Omni is different than other video AIs. It is fully multimodal, so it can edit video natively, too I took the famous "train " movie from 1896 & made it a bullet train, LEGO, added a time traveler, a centipede, muppets... (note the reflections and shadows?)

While enshittification is a real problem, many things have evolved in disappointing directions and many valuable things have been lost there's a tendency to idealize the old web that ignores a lot of the genuine improvements that have accrued (A lot of it is raw technology improvement, but still).

It's incredibly funny watching Millennials demonstrating that Douglas Adams's technology adoption rules remain valid decades later
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.
