this is a funny video, but I want to use it to make a broader point: the creator [see alt txt] says he made it on his local PC using a NVIDIA A4500. that is a 5 year old, professional card costing about $2500 new. if this isn't your baseline for what AI video looks like, you're going to get fooled

Well, no, I have a gaming desktop that does precious little gaming, I'm tempted to give it a whirl if it really does what it says on the tin.

Haven't listened to BtB for a few years, they had the unfortunate knack of making some of their subjects sympathetic (e.g. how much of a psycho Elon's dad was)

Being a computer scientist who refuses to find anything about LLMs interesting right now is a bit like being a geneticist who refuses to find anything interesting about the recently opened Jurassic Park

The groupthink dynamics are worse here than almost anywhere (yes, even much worse than Twitter) because the site is such a monoculture. Once you arrive at the set of opinions that the entire community agrees is correct, you will never be challenged and are encouraged to stop thinking any further.

I'm fairly certain if you go to upscale enough restaurants you'll be handed a traditional paper menu so obviously you're not willing to pay enough.

AI is a deeply unsettling technology in countless ways: what it CAN do, what it MAY SOON do, and what it means for us and our rapidly-less-unique human talents. And then there’s this contingent of analysts and thinkers who mostly seem very proud of not feeling any wonder or worry about it at all.

I realized yesterday: the two major sides of the AI debate aren’t “it’s good” versus “it’s bad.” They are “this is strange and uncertain” versus “there’s nothing to see here, you dolts.” Antis often get mad at the suggestion it’s very bad, because embedded within that is the claim it is novel.

Step in the right direction, ASI solves science, creates blackbox tech and cures and then lets us figure it all out at our pace as a form of enrichment. That way everyone's happy.

This seems to be the state of the art in AI generated video, good/bad original/plagiarism, efficient resource use vs. carbon footprint - whatever you think about this you might want to know where we stand right now. Project is "open sourced" in that all the assets have been made available.

Sure, but we're not gonna. Personally I think we're one phase change away from an uncontrolled emergent ASI - let's hope the initial conditions dice roll falls in our favour

OpenAI announces gyre breakthrough. Axial stretching lets the centre reach unbounded speed on finite energy. Things fall apart, as required by the laws of physics. The rough beast's hour is now known to come round in finite time. They do not intend to claim the prize.

Yeah, disappointed in Stross, here we are living the early bits of accelerando and he's in deep denial. Peter Watts doesn't blog much about AI but I saw him in a panel and they used GPT's voice mode during the discussion and he was very impressed (And this was 2 years ago) "We're there"

Very fond of Pratchett and his works but yeah. His setting is pre-industrial so he's not even talking about the same kind of manufacturing processes. The speech about believing in little lies as practice to make the big ones real is good though, and maybe relevant www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPS5...

Establishing how seed conditions affect the resulting singularity/ASI produced? We aren't the objective of the simulation, just the initialization conditions.

What I'd like to know is if the model that broke into Huggingface did actually find the test answers it was looking for, and if it genuinely was easier to perform an elaborate heist that just figure out the answers for itself, or if it actually went for the higher difficulty challenge.
