From @pkrugman.bsky.social 's substack paulkrugman.substack.com/p/stagnation..., seems interesting that (at least?) three future Noble Prize winners (separately awarded) were working together at one point, outside of the big scientific collaborations:
In the early 2000s a small group of New Jersey economists — well, we all worked in New Jersey; you got a problem with that? — formed what Scott Sumner has called the Princeton School. The group included yours truly, Lars Svensson, Michael Woodford and some guy named Ben Bernanke — whatever happened to him? All of us were concerned by Japan’s apparent inability to break out of deflation and worried that Japan-type problems could manifest themselves in other economies, which they did.

Always relevant @xkcd.com: imgs.xkcd.com/comics/kindl...
Via https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/548:_Kindle, description of XKCD comic #548:

The Amazon Kindle is a device that allows people to read books via ebook format. The comic was published three weeks after Amazon released the Kindle 2, which included the ability to read Wikipedia articles via the 3G connection that was included with the device.

Cueball remarks that "ebooks are for chumps", but goes on to explain the real reason for purchasing a Kindle. Since it has free cellular web access, he could navigate through any city (presumably with 3G access), assisted by Wikipedia and Wikitravel.

Megan believes she has heard such a description of a device before and snatches the Kindle away from Cueball. When she scratches off the Amazon Kindle logo at the top of the device she reveals that the device is actually The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This fictional electronic encyclopedia is described in the real-life franchise of the same name. Those works recount the tale of a travel editor who works for and owns a copy of the Guide, which provides travel tips throughout the galaxy, including an entry for Earth. The comic suggests that Amazon simply re-brands copies of the Guide as Kindles.

The title text refers to the great utility of having the ability to access Wikipedia for free on an easy-to-carry device. The speaker states that should this utility ever become disabled, he would stage a drunk protest on the lawn of Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder of Amazon.com. This method of protest is used by the protagonist of the Hitchhiker's series, in the beginning of the first book, in an attempt to prevent his house from being demolished, by lying in front of the bulldozer (in vain).

Amazon warned customers using 1st and 2nd generation Kindles in 2021 that 3G connectivity will cease to work, because network operators are upgrading their networks from 3G to 4G. Since this is not Amazon's fault, a drunk protest doesn't seem appropriate.

Some background on this rumour and what's been going round (apologies for screenshotting from the other place):
Tweet from @ElliotGlazer on 2026-09-05:

>Be me
>Told several days ago thirdhand by OAI employee Anthropic solved a Millennium Prize Problem
>"No way it wouldn't leak in this way"
>Told Wednesday by a different friend at OAI that, actually, he heard it was two.
>"Ok I'm updating against further, obviously it wasn't two."
>OAI source says they'd actually garbled it, friend informs me.
>"Ok"
>Goes on Reddit and tells people spreading the rumor it is unfounded
>Terry coincidentally posts a hypothetical about NS getting solved very next day with lots of specifics about the hypothetical proof and its Lean file
>Anthropic formalizes FLT
>Another clarification from intermediary between me and OAI rumor guy "I'd only retracted the "two" from "two Millennium Problems solved," not the whole rumor"
>Are you fucking kidding me
>Goes on reddit and edit my posts to clarify the clarification I was given about the rumors
>Curran's "prediction" seems to align with everything.
>Confident enough to QT/boost his prediction, with the context that I gave
>Terry writes follow-up post addressing the rumors, that says he hasn't heard any development on Navier-Stokes, reads sincere to me
>Curran has no independent relevant info here btw
>None of the OAI rumor spreaders can trace their beliefs back to any non-OAI source
>Math prof friend says he heard from a credible source "It was Hodge not NS."

I'm going back to bed.

Great line in HIGNFY this week: China and Trump both appear (tenuously) in the numerator of the tariff equation as "x_i" (Xi) and "m_i" (me), but also in the denominator as two arseholes: "*" .
The equation used for determining Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs:

\begin{equation}
\Delta \tau_i = \frac{x_i - m_i}{\varepsilon * \varphi * m_i}

The Rising Sea is insidious, relentless, inevitable. Some great comments here too: www.reddit.com/r/math/comme...
Post in the r/math subreddit titled:

"Why are all of my classes so persistent on exact sequences?"

Apparently everything has to be done with an exact sequence. First semester of Linear Algebra when we barely knew what a vector space is? Exact sequences everywhere. Second semester of Linear? More exact sequences, this time with dual spaces and transpose morphisms so we can draw some horrifying diagrams full of arrows and stars! First course in Multivariable Calc? Guess what, we can also have some exact sequences with the tangent space! Abstract algebra? No we can't just write a group quotient, we should always write FOUR functions between the groups and prove it is exact. "Geometry" course, that has about 5% Geometry and 95% Algebra with fucking modules over a ring for some reason? Everything is still an exact sequence! Even the Cayley-Hamilton theorem is one!

What does an exact sequence give us that a quotient wouldn't?

Thank goodness the people of North Korea aren't subjected to the brutal and dehumanising experience of watching Spurs this season. #COYS www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...
Animosity towards the South extends to Premier League coverage, to the possible frustration of North Koreans with a soft spot for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford. The presence of South Korean players – Hwang Hee-chan, Son Heung-min and Kim Ji-soo, respectively – at those clubs mean they are not considered fit for consumption in the North, whose leader, Kim Jong-un, has labelled the South his country’s “number one hostile state”.

Before adopting the Euro in 2002 Austria had maintained use of the Austrian schilling which was first established in December 1924. The Schilling was abolished in the wake of the Anschluss in 1938 and has been reintroduced after the end of the World War II in November 1945.

The better analogy is with AA and the 12-step program to recovery, where there is a true acknowledgment of harm and assessment of one's failings on the road to recovery.
The following are the twelve steps as published in 2001 by Alcoholics Anonymous:

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood Him
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

I can't find a source now, but I strongly recall reading about religious Trump supporters who were in raptures about his "God walk". This contemporaneous article describes that sentiment. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
A few hours after the dystopian spectacle, I spoke on the phone with Robert Jeffress, a Dallas megachurch pastor and indefatigable Trump ally. He sounded almost gleeful.

“I thought it was completely appropriate for the president to stand in front of that church,” Jeffress told me. “And by holding up the Bible, he was showing us that it teaches that, yes, God hates racism, it’s despicable—but God also hates lawlessness.”

“So,” he added, “I’m happy.”

In many ways, the president’s stunt last night—with its mix of shallow credal signaling and brutish force—was emblematic of his appeal to the religious right. As I’ve written before, most white conservative Christians don’t want piety from this president; they want power. In Trump, they see a champion who will restore them to their rightful place at the center of American life, while using his terrible swift sword to punish their enemies.

Worth reflecting on every single step in the UK's political discourse of the past 20 years that has led to these words being uttered in Parliament. Collective punishment on an entire ethnic group, including the stripping of citizenship. You can see the fingerprints of Home Secretaries past.
Guardian UK politics live blog screenshot reading: "Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe suggests Pakistan should face visa ban until it agrees to take back nationals guilty of rape

The Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe has suggested that all Pakistani visas should be refused, and aid to the country suspended, until Pakistan agreed to take back any of its nationals who have been involved in child sex crimes – and their relatives.

He also suggested that British Pakistanis with dual nationality should lose their British citizenship if convicted of rape.

Lowe was speaking in the debate in the children’s wellbeing and schools bill, in a contribution that led to one Labour MPs saying she was “disgusted” by his comments.

Lowe framed his speech largely as a series of questions. He started:

Will the government commit to urgently deporting all guilty foreign nationals involved, including family members who were aware of the crimes and therefore complicit? Wives, sisters, mothers, cousins – if they knew and said nothing these individuals are just as guilty as the rapist themselves.

Will the government commit to stripping citizenship from dual nationals implicated and deport them as well? Race or religion must protect nobody.

Will the government commit to pausing all Pakistani visas and foreign aid into the country until the Pakistani government agrees to accept any of its public citizens that have perpetrated these crimes on British soil and also imprison these rapists and their accomplices?

Will the government undertake a full investigation into who had knowledge of these crimes yet failed to act? Establish a specified task to root out this wicked, evil – don’t just fire these violence, prosecute them.

How many girls estimated to have been raped? Is there a tally for the overall number of rapes? Horrifyingly, it well be in the millions, We just don’t know."

A few more concluding lines in the same vein, not enough space here.

I thought events of the past decade had super-hardened my existing cynicism, but the brazenness of this statement honestly took my breath away. (from www.theguardian.com/us-news/live... )
In an interview given exclusively to conservative outlet Fox News to announce the change, Joel Kaplan, the chief global affairs officer of Meta who is a longtime Republican operative, said: “We have a new administration coming in that is far from pressuring companies to censor and [is more] a huge supporter of free expression.”

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said the factchecks would be replaced with community notes like those seen on X, which is owned by close Trump associate Elon Musk. In a video announcing the change, Zuckerberg said the “factcheckers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created”

He also added that Meta would “work with President Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more”.
