In accordance with ancient tradition, our next Prime Minister is announced to the nation while standing between a furry and a man with a bin on his head.
A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.

New Victoria Hospital will no longer provide masculising gender-affirming surgery from December. We have been assured by NHS England that it is looking at alternative providers to continue this service, and that they will keep patients informed. transactual.org.uk/blog/2026/06...
TransActual is aware that NHS Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Services (GDNRSS) has issued an email stating that New Victoria Hospital in London will no longer provide masculising gender-affirming surgery from December of this year.

We have been assured by NHS England that it is looking at alternative providers to continue this service, and that they will keep patients informed and up-to-date on this process. This situation will ultimately lead to further delays for trans patients who have already spent years on waiting lists. Whilst NHS England could not control the decision by New Victoria Hospital not to renew the contract, they have a responsibility to act to minimise the harm of delayed care. Waiting lists for these surgeries are already unacceptably long.

We continue to ask that NHS England support and finance patients to medically transition abroad – in EU countries or beyond – rather than delay care further.

I don't know what other way of reading this there is other than a single man's personal hostility to Human Rights' law, and power over the Supreme Court's entire makeup, has succeeded in crushing any dissent to his personal belief that the Human Rights Act needs to be neutered.
Further, Reed mentioned in 2026 that previous candidates for Supreme Court vacancies were asked, in their interview, whether “an overenthusiastic interpretation of the Human Rights Act” had led to a “damaged… relationship” between courts and the legislature. This is a loaded question. What is an “overenthusiastic interpretation” of the Act? Overenthusiastic by whose measure? Does it mean any approach which differs from Reed’s own (notably conservative) interpretation? Reed suggested that the obvious answer to his question was “yes”, and that anyone disagreeing would make Reed wonder “what planet… this person [had] been living on”. In response Lord Waldegrave confirmed: “for somebody living on that planet, they would be rather unlikely to get on to the supreme court?”. Reed’s answer was stark: “so long as I’m chairing the selection commission.”

🚨DR UK's Statement on the EHRC's New Code of Practice "We are appalled at implications that an adequate workaround is trans people using Disabled toilets instead. We will not be used as a loophole in the wider erosion of trans rights." Full statement👇 www.disabilityrightsuk.org/news/disabil...
Disability Rights UK’s Statement on the EHRC’s New Code of Practice
As the makers of the original RADAR key and custodian of the National Key Scheme, Disability Rights UK issues our unequivocal solidarity with trans people, who should not be forced to choose between risking harassment in public facilities – or not using them at all.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
We are appalled at implications from the Code that an adequate workaround is trans people using Disabled toilets instead. It is a vain attempt to get two marginalised groups to blame one another for our lack of facilities, when the blame lies firmly at the feet of policymakers. We will not fall for it. We will not be used as a ‘loophole’ in the wider erosion of trans rights.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
Our RADAR key scheme began in 1981, rooted in the understanding that accessible facilities can be the difference between living the lives we deserve – socialising, travelling and working – and complete social exclusion.

Our community knows how it feels to be scapegoated simply for trying to access the necessities we need to live. Trans rights do not come at the expense of Disabled, nor anyone else’s.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
As is clear from this Code of Practice, it sets a dangerous precedent for the erosion of other protected characteristics. If the Equality Act can be up for debate in this arena, who is to say this will not be the case when it comes to disability in the near future?

As a result, the Disabled-led movement must make a clear stand against this ruling, not to mention because 52% of trans people are Disabled themselves.

I have written this letter to my local MP about the EHRC guidelines on single sex spaces. @nionwomen.bsky.social
As a resident in your constituency and member of the LGBTQ community, I am writing to ask you to oppose the EHRC guidelines on single-sex spaces and to do what you can to prevent them from becoming law.
I wrote to you last year following the supreme court ruling on the definition of a woman. I explained why the term
'biological woman' is scientifically illiterate and largely meaningless and explained that there would be many people excluded from society if we use strict, binary groupings to determine gender. As a reminder, I wrote:
- What does 'biological sex' mean? Is it 1. what's on your birth certificate? 2. genitals? 3. hormonal? 4. chromosomes? 5. A combination of all of these?
- If 1. will we all now have to carry our birth certificates around with us and present them every time we wish to urinate or try something on in a shop? If 2. Will we have to present our genitals for inspection? If 3. Will we have to take a 'gender test' similar to that undergone by elite athletes?
- Where will intersex people go? There are statistically as many intersex people as those who have red hair. Will cis women with naturally high testosterone be allowed to use single sex spaces? What about cis women who are post-menopausal?
I still have the same concerns, even as the gender critical lobby have apparently gained even more of a strangle-hold over public policy in the interim. If the EHCR guidelines become law, trans people will effectively be pushed out of public life. Furthermore, it will embolden self-appointed gender-police to challenge cis women who they do not deem 'feminine' enough in public toilets and changing rooms. We have already seen this happening in the United States, where men have filmed themselves confronting and intimidating tall, muscular, short-haired or otherwise gender non-conforming women. The stated aim of this guidance is to keep men out of women's spaces, but in reality it has the opposite effect - Perverts and dangerous men who are radicalised far-right and gender critical social media content, who are unhealthily obsessed with other people's genitals and believe they can tell who is trans simply by looking, now feel entitled to harass women under the guise of 'protecting' us. It is an own goal for feminism.
As a tall cis woman, if this guidance were to be endorsed by parliament I would feel less safe.
The women who support the EHRC guidance are a very loud (and in many instances well-funded) minority. Polling consistently shows that most women support trans people's rights to use spaces which align with their true gender. Please represent us in Parliament and in your work around this issue.
Thank you
