A few km at a time in either direction is functionally a static situation. However, I think you are probably correct that the Russians are taking much heavier losses, and that at some point it will break them.

Russia is a gas station with nukes... and essentially all of their oil trade runs through the territorial waters of NATO members. All NATO members should close their territorial waters to all vessels trading with Russia until Russia withdraws from Ukraine and fully compensates Ukraine.

The only reason it's at any kind of stalemate is because of Trump's pro-Russian fuckery. Any result that doesn't include complete Russian withdrawal from Ukrainian territory is just an invitation to Putin to re-arm and do it again.

Give Ukraine access to the weapons it needs to expel Russia from its territory.

My father and both his sisters (none of whom were actors) all spoke with a mid-Atlantic accent, as did some of their friends. They were all born in the late teens/early 20s and grew up in NYC.

No, it's an upper class New York accent from the first half of the 20th century. It's been extinct in the wild for decades, so people get the (false) idea that it was artificial.

I am deeply angry that some of my precious memories are taken up by knowledge of what Roko's Basilisk is. I feel dumber because of it. I could be keeping something worthwhile in that storage space... like the memory of a really good shit.

What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Ambergris is not whale puke. It's a substance that forms in the intestines of sperm whales to protect them from the indigestible beaks of the squid they eat. They poop it out and it cures in the sun.

1) Formal medical education in the modern sense didn't exist in Jenner's lifetime, and it's not relevant. 2) 20th century smallpox vaccines were still made with cowpox, just like Jenner's. 3) Better medical ethics today don't change the fact that Jenner's vaccine worked and worked well.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

I don't think that total helicopter accidents are necessarily a good metric for how dangerous helicopter commuter operations are, because helicopters are used for some extremely high risk purposes (like oil services and high tension line maintenance) that probably skew the overall average.
