They are typically checking for flu, Covid 19 and Strept - and very few in US use multiplex Resp pathogen panels - that is PCR for 7 to 12 common viruses!

Needless to say, healthcare facilities dealing with an unknown respiratory disease should immediately restart full airborne disease precautions… if not in place already.

Is COVID why everyone's getting sick? YES!
A screenshot of a social media post by Daily Mail (@DailyMail) with a verified blue checkmark, dated 1:24 AM · Oct 6, 2026, with 122.1K Views.
The post text reads: "Is Covid why everyone's getting sick? Cases of virus have doubled in a month and hospitalisations up five-fold - amid spread of new XFG variant".
Below the text is a linked article preview image featuring a healthcare worker with blonde hair wearing a blue uniform, blue medical gloves, and adjusting a light blue surgical face mask. A black caption box overlaid at the bottom of the image mirrors the headline: "Is Covid why everyone's sick? Cases of virus have doubled in a month". There are many hundreds of viruses and variants of viruses that can cause cold like symptoms… but this is a long illness, with a relapse phase, and it’s causing pneumonia which is a “severe” illness.
1132
Dr Noor Bari @njbbari3.bsky.social · 54m
This should be investigated and the cause elucidated as fast as C19 was… at least. It could be an old or a new airborne pathogen, and if it’s causing pneumonia, it has the potential to cause chaos.

I would send samples from the sickest patients for full investigation. Viruses, bacteria, fungi, other in between organisms, starting with the basics of culture and microscopy, including electron microscopy.

Honestly, this is fascinating. It looks like standard respiratory panel testing is being done, which is PCR of 7-12 common viruses. C-19 has been specifically mentioned as tested for… so even if it wasn’t on the standard panel it’s been thought about… So…

Psychological illness is real illness too, and some long COVID patients may also have psychiatric diagnoses… which may be due in some cases to COVID effects on the brain… But long COVID is more than that, and it happens after an infection… or five.
