This is adorable but also it is the dog equivalent of making the knee-jerk decision to hold the door for someone who's probably a bit too far away, then you both realise they are actually way too far away, but you're committed now so you both have to suck it up and wait for it to play out.

So they're right on a technicality. Which is a bit irritating, but I guess does explain why some white women are so eager to see these protests grow. (Although prob not most of them. Most of them it's probably just the racism)

With irritation just realised that the screaming anti-migrant fuckwits who fib about making white women & children safe technically ARE doing more to keep white women & children safe, because every time there's a protest some blokes with a history of violence/domestic abuse get arrested.

Mentioning South Africa won't dissuade or distract these people because they'd have disagreed with the end of Apartheid there, too.

Facebook pitching me an advert for a play starring Tracy-Ann Oberman and James Dreyfus is pretty hilarious. Like KT Hopkins and Nigel Farage went to RADA.

...which is that when something like this happens in a community, there are usually three responses: Silence & distance 'Oh it was an open secret that they were sketchy' Or 'This is a complete shock, they're clearly a sophisticated & manipulative monster' All understandable and shit...

I'm certain these conversations are being had in person or face to face but I don't see these folks face to face. (Bevis is usually vocal & always correct on issues like this so this isn't a surprise, but still good to see from my perspective...

Agree with all of this. Also, while I have zero doubts about any of the folks I still know who I met in my position as a ubiquitous outsider to the UK comic scene of about 25 years back, it's a relief seeing folks who were also around speak on the subject with their whole chest...

I'd become so radicalised against the idea of the Singular Genius at such an early fundamental (to me) level that it's been such a relief to realise it's not just some weird feeling I'm mixed up about, loads of smart people think the same & link it to other shit I already also believed...

I guess my thought is Twitter was one of the few spaces where there was literally no real systemic excuse for only listening to the voices that were right in front of you, and ignoring less 'familiar' voices, with zero friction to finding marginalised thinkers, and progressives blew it.

...which is to say Twitter of old has thus far been the ONLY place default folks could as easily access Black, LGBTQ, disabled or poor voices as any other, & for most part they still largely elevated their own celebrities, & any time things got hairy they exclaimed about leaving the neighbourhood...

Certain this was prompted by something more directly but: I don't think I'll ever stop thinking of the energy outspoken white lib folks put into each wave of Twitter-migration pre-Musk takeover as a clear sign they valued civility more than a somewhat democratic landscape for marginalised voices...

Yeah I think there's probably specific situations you have in mind that both posts connect to, but where coming to it fresh made it sound like the former was about more specific behavioural or social stuff, that didn't clearly link with the latter. There's no one part of it that isn't true tho like.

I tend to be leery of the idea that if individuals are shitty in some ways it tarnishes a whole project on a few fronts, not least because it implies that on the one hand the speaker doesn't really understand the impacts of us all coming through the same shitty systems...

I tend to get far more frustrated with people who are notionally on the same 'side' as me, so this isn't to dispute your FIRST point, but: why is being an imperfect person an indication of either a or b, or even a sign that a movement won't, in general, be better for more people than another?

It's got a weirdly good cast struggling with pretty tepid writing, and the more you see of the cast elsewhere the more glaring it is how underused they are in it. Then you see Harriet Dyer in "Colin from Accounts", and you can totally picture her leading a proper, insightful & funny version of it.

Nicolas Papaconstantinou @nixsight.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
"DMV" is apparently based on a story that sounds very bleak & blackly comic, about a woman in a dull job driven to horrible extremes by loneliness & desperation; by contrast the show is just a "race to the next zinger" workplace comedy full of "characters", that falls flat in a crowded sub-genre.

Nicolas Papaconstantinou @nixsight.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The more of "Colin from Accounts" I watch, the more I'm absolutely certain that at pitch stage there was a completely different version of "DMV" that Harriet Dyer (and probably the rest of the cast, from Tim Meadows on) signed up for.

A more paranoid Nick might think it's actually deliberate, to wind up reactionaries to "action" and make progress look silly, but I suspect it's really just more often the same clueless old white liberal bullshit.

That tactic used to frustrate me by hitting me right in my autism - because of how incorrect and dishonest it was - but then I was like 'hang on, the REASON it's frustrating you is because it's incorrect, & it's incorrect because you aren't upset because they don't matter' & now it barely registers.

Yeah absolutely this. They're operating at a pretty blunt instrument level and that - and it's kissing cousin the 'I know you are but what am I' simplicity of them landing at 'hah hah it was all a joke and you're so upset about it' - is a foundational tactic some learn in the school playground...

Pen, watercolor, acrylic paint, black & white charcoal pencil.

One of my favorite pieces from my new book, Spooky Pants. Coming out this October.

A small cabin in the snow surrounded by trees. Two cabin people stand outside holding mugs of hot cider. One of them shouts out, “Big Fella, we got hot apple cider happening over here.” On the other side of the page we see Big Fella, a massive spider emerging from the forest.

Artist’s note: The spider only has 6 legs.. I made a mistake. However, I did read that some spiders can lose their legs in battle so maybe that’s what happened. Also, this drawing was probably directly inspired by the game Limbo. I love the art direction in it.

Keep feeling genuinely cheery about the fact that some people are going to end up listening to or owning a 2026 Proclaimers album because their politics makes them feel they should. Some of them are even going to feel they need to pretend they fucking love it. And the band will also know why.

Elsewhere on Bluesky folks are noting that The Kids These Days aren't much into Douglas Adams. As someone who is much into Douglas Adams (and in fact wrote an intro to new edition of his works) allow me to remind folks that it's not actually surprising when The Kids aren't into decades-old stuff.

It's normal for art and pop culture to move on, and it's a hilarious accident of getting old that people forget how they felt about their parents' shit when they get old themselves. That isn't to say that some kids won't love old stuff, but it's weird to expect it.

Adams perfectly rewrote HGTTG for each new medium himself, making dramatic changes that would have enraged modern 'fans' because of their omissions, additions and shifts in focus. Time passing is a similar phenomenon.
