Calvin: Hey Dad, know what I figured out? The meaning of words isn't a fixed thing! Any word can mean anything! By giving words new meanings, ordinary english can become an exclusionary code! Two generations can be divided by the same language! To that end, I'll be inventing new definitions for common words, so we'll be unable to communicate. Don't you think that's totally Spam? It's lubricated! Well, I'm phasing.
Dad: Marvy. Fab. Far out.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Higher Education is not just about training workers, but also about training citizen leaders and good citizenship in part means thinking that the details matter, that getting them right matters, because it impacts some of your fellow citizens. "It only matters if job" is poison to citizenship.

OK. I mentioned this before, won't belabor it, but this paragraph is art. I would wager a not-inconsiderable sum that Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, Augustine, and Lon Chaney have never been cited in a single paragraph before. (And hopefully never will again.)
Plaintiff has sued Wizards for $10M because he believes he created and exclusively owns the
idea for a “wereshark” and that Wizards has infringed upon his creation. By way of relevant
background, lycanthropic monsters – werewolves and the like – have been found in folklore and
fiction since antiquity. Hundreds of years before the Common Era, Herodotus wrote of the Neuri, a
tribe northeast of Scythia that would reportedly transform into wolves for several days once a year.
Herodotus, The Histories, 4.105 (circa 440 BCE). Werewolves continued to appear in folklore from
antiquity through modern times, and across a wide range of cultures. See, e.g., Pausanias, Description of
Greece, 8.2 (circa 160-180 CE); Ovid, The Metamorphoses, I 219-239 (circa 8 CE); Pliny the Elder,
Natural History, VIII.34 (circa 77 CE); Augustine, The City of God, XVIII.17 (circa 426 CE); King
Canute, Ecclesiastical Ordinances, c. 26 (circa 1020 CE); Anonymous, The Tale of Igor’s Campaign (circa
late 1100s) (Slavic folklore); Marie de France, Bisclavret (circa 1200); Völsungasaga, ch. 8 (circa 1250
CE) (Nordic folklore). Bram Stoker depicted Dracula as a werewolf in Dracula’s Guest. Werewolves
1 Plaintiff Lap-Sun Chan named “Dungeons and Dragons Wizards of the Coast LLC” as the Defendant, but Dungeons
and Dragons is a game published and owned by Wizards of the Coast, LLC, not a distinct entity.
2 See Chan v. Ramdhaney, Case No. 1:22-cv-03708 (S.D.N.Y 2022) 3 See Eng v. Podolnick, No. 1:14-cv-04675 (S.D.N.Y 2014) (dismissed for failure to comply with order requiring Plaintiff to
“file an amended complaint not containing the stricken portions or any other racist, anti-Semitic, or insulting language”).came to the silver screen first in Werewolf of London (1935) and then Lon Chaney’s definitive
performance in The Wolf Man (1941), and have essentially never left it since. And animal
shapeshifting has not been limited to wolves. Greek mythology is replete with humans (or humanshaped gods) who transform into animals or monsters. In Tlingit folklore, Kóoshdaa are wereotters. Celtic mythology includes selkies (were-seals) and kelpies (shape-shifting water-horses that
live in lochs). DC Comics has featured numerous shark-human hybrids since its Silver Age,
including Guppy (a small-time criminal in Nightwing’s rogues’ gallery, first appearance in 2018),
King Shark (the son of a shark god and a human mother, first appearance in 1994), and Karshon (a
mutated shark, first appearance in Green Lantern 24, October 1963). Other examples abound.

25th Amendment only applies to the president. Members of Congress cannot be recalled. The only mechanism to remove a sitting senator or representative is for 2/3 of their chamber to expel them. (That's Article I, Section 5, Clause 2, which doesn't work very well as a chant.)

Immigrants want to work, pay taxes, and establish a safe and stable life in the US? "Country's full. GTFO!" But do we have the capacity for 185 million more homes' worth of gas power generation? "You bet! Carbon is the smell of progress!!"
Text excerpted from the linked article:

In January, the group found that there were 97 gigawatts of gas projects in development exclusively for data centers at the end of 2025, a massive increase from just 4 gigawatts tracked in early 2024. Now, in an update to the research released Tuesday, the group says that as of mid-2026, that demand pipeline has jumped to more than 189 gigawatts. (A gigawatt can power roughly a million homes.)

So, could a state declare its senator to be dead under state law and thereby force the office to be vacant? (Let's assume the deceased senator does not publicly object to this, but it's a different interesting hypo if they do.)

And *when* the person dies is also significant for state law purposes. In the case of a senator, the date of the vacancy matters for the timing of any term-filling election or effective date of Gov. appointment.

Redbeard @nixedroar.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
(There have also been occasional cases where an individual is declared dead under state law because they have been missing for a set amount of time, but then they later turn up alive and have to go through a court process to undo their legal death.)

Redbeard @nixedroar.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
What if it's not guardianship, but the ultimate question of whether the person is dead? Whether an individual is dead or alive is commonly a matter of state law (and can get complicated when there's brain death with medical intervention keeping the heart pumping).

The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking. An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times. The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.

Relatedly, local candidates and campaigns have a much easier time reaching and educating voters who are physically present in the community (can attend events, see yard signs, hear TV/radio ads) than those who are outside the area during the entire election season and vote absentee.

Redbeard @nixedroar.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Why do we assume such voters would have any greater knowledge of local issues about the town they grew up in but where they no longer reside and have no intention to return to? Voters have a duty to learn about the topics they vote on. If they don't, that's not the fault of residency rules.

Oh sure, not rewarding mediocrity or saying fans should demand less than excellence. But not every team can have a winning record, make playoffs, or win the Cup. Every team CAN give their fans a good time. Rapids appear to at least do that (cf. Crew or Miami, same home record, much higher prices)
