One neat thing about my grad students all picking individual species for their research us that I think of them ever time I see their critter in the field. Thankfully, my grads have all been nice folk that I enjoy the reminder. I'm a lucky mentor.

With all the news of museums being closed and/or defunded, I feel the message of our paper on the importance of natural history research (and the collections housing those specimens) is just as relevant (or more) today as it was when it was published. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is seeking applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Insect Ecology (60% teaching/40% research). The position will play a central role in the department’s undergraduate curriculum, including ENT 201: Insects and People, as well as additional undergraduate and graduate courses. The position also provides an opportunity to build a nationally recognized research program in insect ecology, secure external funding, and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead instruction for ENT 201: Insects and People and teach additional courses using effective, technology-enhanced approaches. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs.

Establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in insect ecology (e.g., behavior, plant–insect interactions, community ecology, conservation, or global change biology). Publish in peer-reviewed journals and engage students in research.

Contribute to departmental, college, and university service, engage with scientific societies, review manuscripts and grant proposals, and participate in outreach.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Expertise in one or more areas of insect ecology (e.g., IPM, invasive species, pollination biology, vector ecology, trophic interactions, global change, or molecular/community ecology).

Ph.D. in Entomology or a related field, with a proven publication and funding track record (as PI/Co-PI or lead author).

🗃️ Some of us have been saying this for awhile (like Lindsay and OP). It’s simple. Give faculty time and resources to teach, per basic pedagogy practices, no innovation needed. It’s a matter of prioritizing this as necessary for the university to do well as an institution of higher learning.

Another reason a business model will never be appropriate for #HigherEd : had to update a lecture for tomorrow (base slides and concept already done) spent 3 hrs reworking the lecture and getting it ADA compliant... for a 1 hr lecture. Class is IN my speciality and been writing lectures for 20 yrs.

It often feels like the modern understanding of indigeneity and tribal life is stuck in the 19th century so as a reference point: my hapū are currently tracking h5n1, giving us updates on seabird migrations, and providing biosecurity advice and contact numbers.

NY-10 is, according to the Jewish Electorate Institute, the second most Jewish Congressional district in the US. (www.jewishelectorateinstitute.org/p6611) It voted overwhelmingly for a candidate who says Israel is committing genocide. That should challenge assumptions about what American Jews want.

Finally! After 9 years as Department Chair, scrabbling and scrounging for resources, I have managed to upgrade the department to having BINOCULAR compound microscopes for all our labs. Can't believe it took that long. The Leeuwenhoek era is FINALLY over! Now I can stop being chair.

We have been doing quite some chemodiversity work in recent years, but often focus on the plot-level environment. However, we also have a pretty neat stock-garden of Tansy lines, where last summer we did an intensive sampling (17 events) of plant growth and insect colonization. (1/2)

I tell my students that an important part of good communication is to avoid misleading terms and jargon. Therefore, from now: "capitalism" => "profiteering" "socialism" => "community-centered governance." That way people actually understand the difference.
