Emmett Till was a 14-year-old Black teenager from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Mississippi in August 1955 while visiting relatives. Till was accused of whistling at or offending a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, in a local grocery store. Days later, Carolyn’s husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, kidnapped Emmett from his great-uncle’s home, beat him, shot him, and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River. His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral so the world could see the brutality inflicted on her son, and images from the funeral shocked the nation.

The 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing took place on September 15 1963, just 19 days after Dr. Martin Luther King gave his “I Have A Dream” speech at the March on Washington, in Washington, D.C. Four young girls, Denise McNair, age 11, and Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins, all age 14, were killed in the racially motivated attack by the Ku Klux Klan against an African American church active in the ongoing civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama.

June 12, 1963: Medgar Evers is assassinated. He was 37. Evers pulled into his driveway after returning from a meeting with NAACP lawyers. Emerging from his car and carrying NAACP T-shirts that read "Jim Crow Must Go," he was struck in the back with a bullet fired from an Enfield 1917 rifle; it ricocheted into his home. He staggered 9 meters before collapsing. Evers died at a local hospital 50 minutes later.

Armed with baseball bats and at least one handgun, the white boys set upon the Black boys. Yusef was shot twice in the chest and was later pronounced dead at the nearby Maimonides Medical Center.
